Today, I was having dinner with my college friends to celebrate the end of our first year. I said really great things about them as individuals. The only thing they had to say to me was, "Thanks for being the token black friend." FML

Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, at a party, my friend introduced me to her roommate by spouting the usual crap, like, “You guys just had to meet, you have so much in common.” After 20 minutes of very painful, awkward conversation, it was clear the only thing we had in common was being the only two black people in the room. FML
Today, my friends and I noticed that people, no matter what stereotype, pretty much all have the same type of friends: the mean one, the funny one, etc., and started naming off the people in our group who fit into those personalities. We got to the token fat one, everyone looked at me and stopped talking. FML
Today, while meeting my boyfriend's family for the first time, the first comment I received was, "Well, at least this one is white." FML
Today, at work, I casually mentioned I was meeting some friends for dinner. My co-worker's response was, "You have friends?!" FML
Today, I saw my friends talking about plans for later during lunch. I walked over and asked for the plan. My best friend of 12 years gently took me aside, and said "You know that person in each group of friends that is only around to be made fun of? That's you." I just got dumped by my friends. FML
Today, I found out one of my "friends" is “scared” to talk to me because I’m black. FML
Today, my best friend told me I'm the friend who no one really likes. This was after I had bought her lunch, ice cream, and a ticket to a movie we were going to see that day. FML
Today, my sister is working on her graduation speech. She gives her thanks to one friend for helping support her through school, like, "The sister I never had". FML
Today, I was at my cousin's wedding. In the toasts they talked about how my parents became their second parents and my sister became their new sister, while they've never been a real family to me. I felt like that's my fault, then I felt self-centered thinking about that while others celebrated and confessed their love. FML
Today, I thought that something that happened with my friends last year had died down. I realised I was on the wrong side of the argument, so I apologised. My friend apologised as well while I was absent, and apparently everyone was crying and hugging. You know the response I got from them? "Umm… OK?" I swear everyone hates me. FML

3-No, I think they were trying to come off as the opposite of racists. If they have an African-American in the group, then they can assert to other people that they're not racists. (When I said African-American, that was due to OP stating that he lived in the U.S.)

Your comment just reminded me of the show Friends. That show was so White, it didn't even HAVE a token Black friend, or any other minorities, for that matter. Wonder if that's how OP feels--like they stepped into a brainless sitcom.

16-They actually tried putting in an African-American in one of their later seasons to appeal to a wider audience, but it was disliked by a majority of the audience, so they took him out.
