What are you doing?

Today, my boyfriend proposed with his grandmother’s ring in front of a huge crowd of all our friends. It might have been romantic if he hadn’t stolen the ring from his parents' safe and if we weren’t juniors in high school. Now everyone thinks I’m a huge bitch for saying no in front of everyone. FML

Hell with the lot of them. This GenXer thinks you are a decent, intelligent, mature young lady who will go a long way with that attitude. That boy is an idiot, a thief and has absolutely zero regard for his family. Red flags all round really. The only thing I would have done differently would have been to take the ring and immediately return it to his parents after school, just to be absolutely sure it gets put back where it belongs and that the family knows exactly what level of brainless idiot they're dealing with. If he looses that ring, it's going to break someone's heart. As to the rest of the group? "I'm sorry but I have too much self respect to accept stolen goods and why would I want to be with an utterly thoughtless thief? What's he going to steal from me when he wants it? You can ignore giant flashing red flags in your relationships if you want but I'm sure as hell not going to."
