Today, my hours got cut because I couldn't make it into work when they called me in. Why couldn't I make it in? I was in an interview for a better job. I didn't get the job. FML

Wow, people really don't understand how that works... Okay, if you've never had that happen to you, you shouldn't comment on it, really people don't show your stupidity... Let's say you work for Krogers (which until I got a better job, I recently did) Krogers will work you the minimum 8 hrs a week, and they'll call you in any other day that they may need you. Now, it's not fair because if they need you they should schedule you anyway, but since you're in a union (which Krogers is) you get only the minimum allowed hours weekly at just a few cents above minimum wage. If you don't come in when they call you in, they won't schedule you for any extra hours beyond what they HAVE to give you. If you come in all the hours that they didn't schedule you but called you in, they'll continue to give you full time hours on a part time allowance. It's a scam a lot of grocery stores and other retailers do to keep themselves with a cashier and you with as little as they can give you and every other employee... Like I said, if you don't know any better, you probably shouldn't comment on things like this... FYL OP

Sucks for you. Should have taken a sick day.

Why would you plan an interview on a day you knew you could be called in? If you have something like this to do, you make sure your current employer knows you have something important to do that day and won't be able to come in if called. It's called "planning" and really isn't that difficult. There are plenty of people extremely willing to work extra shifts and come in at unexpected times. Those are the people that are rewarded, and it's pretty obvious you're not taking the job seriously anyway.

They may not have known they were going to be called in. Technically, employers can call employees in at any time, assuming their availability works with the shift they need covered. Even then, some employers call you on a Sunday when it clearly states you can't work on a Sunday.

Exactly - employers can call anytime they need a shift covered. Therefore, it's a common and logical to inform your manager, especially at a job where they've called you in before, that you absolutely will not be available to come in on that date. As far as them calling you in on certain days of the week you can't work, such as a Sunday, I know plenty of people that say they can't work plenty of days due to religious reasons, but jump on the opportunity to go in on those days if they'll be getting overtime. It doesn't hurt to double check on standing "can't work" days because of people just like this.

For sure. I see your point. I'm not saying it's a bad idea for some employers to call just to make sure you can't cover a shift on a day requested off, I'm just saying that sometimes it happens. When I had a job, I hated how they called me in on days where I had something going already (either my other job or school) but now that I look back, whether I ended up taking the shift or not it just showed that the workplace valued me enough to ask, even though it was likely I wouldn't make it in.
