Today, it's my last day at my job because I'm moving to another city. My boss handed me a card and chocolates. The same boss that didn't sign the card because, "Even though you're a great employee, I probably won't remember your name in a fortnight." I've been there three years. FML

It probably sounded better in his mind than "I /really/ want an excuse to use the word 'fortnight'."

Hey, at least you got some chocolates! A lot of bosses wouldn't even bother with that. Chocolate makes everything better.

If he had known your name, he might had laid you off or fired you years ago. Anonymity = job security

Eh, just be glad you'll (hopefully) never see him again. A boss like that isn't worthy of your hard work.

fortnight?? well he's clearly from the pre WWII era so he won't remember a great deal more than your name. be sure to send him a card/chocolates for his 108th Bday

Honestly I'm the same way...horrible with names/people! I worked with someone for 2.5 years in one location, moved to another location and he popped up there as well. He knew me but it took several minutes for me to recall him. I felt badly, but it's not as though I forget people on purpose. It was rude of him not to sign the card though. I'd sign the card.

Look, OP: some people are just horrible at remembering names, although they truly care about their friends, coworkers, and employees.

I mean, yes, out of solidarity he should've signed it anyway (even a generic 'good luck' would've been fine), but he /is/ right. We've had so many people leave our company in the past year, some of who had been there since the very beginning (over 20 years). Their cards were signed and they had lovely send offs, but then they get replaced and the office life goes on, and truth to be told, their names hardly ever come up in a conversation. I'm sure there are people who think of them fondly still (I know I do), but when it comes to work, they are now irrelevant. And this is coming from a co-worker, peer level. I imagine your boss doesn't interact with you all that much on daily basis so in a completely not rude real life kind of way, you /were/ just another body to him. Don't take it too personally

OP - Sorry about that. I know that when I have changed jobs I always wanted my old boss to act like they hated to see me go and that I would be missed. But jobs aren't often like that. Life goes on, they are more concerned about the future than the past. Once you quit, you are mentally moved to "the past". Some ex-bosses are nice and reasonable and make you feel important, and some are just jerks. At least you got something - a card and chocolates.
