Today, I'm a 27-year-old back-to-school university student. Everyone hates me because I'm actually interested in participating in my classes and getting good grades, instead of partying, cheating in exams, and generally not giving a crap. Apparently I make them look bad. FML

Hi, this is OP! I'm not doing the whole partying and not giving a crap part because I've already done that when I was their age so now that I'm older I'm more focused on the important stuff like getting a degree. Still, I underdtand where they are coming from, I was also like them when I was 19. Also, I am working as a freelancer on the Internet 30+hr/week so I'm way too busy and tired to get wild! The reason I think the other students don't like me (there are exceptions, of course) is because I really found myself in the field I'm studying now and like to participate in class discussions with questions and my opinions. Also, since I'm older I'm not that intimidated with my professors so I have a more friendly (but still respectful) relationship with them and they like me for my curiosity and interest. Maybe the class think that I'm a smartass or something. But I am super grateful for your support especially now when I'm tired and frustrated with it all and I will keep going for my own well being :)

What school is this? Maybe it's because I went to college, but seeing older people in school is normal. As long as you remain driven and don't let them bother you, you'll do great. Hope your time at school works out and you get an awesome job right after.

The only problem I've ever had with people who like to participate in the discussions (and it's not just mature students) is when they monopolise the conversations. I have had a few tutorials where nobody else could get a word in for the entire hour due to one person constantly asking questions (and butting in when others finally get a chance to talk). It can be very annoying. As long as you aren't doing that OP then we'd be sweet. :P

I see right through this. OP is that obnoxious guy who interrupts lecture by asking a question every five seconds. "Hey, could you let the guy lecture and ask your questions in office hours?" "OH I'M SORRY I GUESS I'M THE ONLY ONE HERE TO LEARN! YOU KIDS AND YOUR ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC!"

Uh-huh. And these few students in the minority had a problem with you because...? My guess is it has something to do with OP's own behavior, and it's only a coincidence that they're older. Otherwise, why would anyone care what grade they're getting, or how much time they spend studying? How would they even know?

Do many places still use a curve grading system? I've only ever had a prof do that once, and that's because the entire class failed her bullshit midterm.

That's great that you care! Its shows your ambition to achieve. You probably are actually paying for your own tuition and they aren't so that's why they do not care as much.

Are you really sure your questions and comments add to the topic? Some people I went to school with would challenge the professor on things that did not need to be discussed or challenged. We all hated them for it.
