Today, I found out that ever since I went from working full-time to part-time, my boss frequently blames me for different things behind my back. Currently, she's telling people I clogged the toilet and lost her keys - on what was actually my day off. FML

Hi, Op here! Thank you for all the kind comments (and yes, I am searching for a new job so I could leave). To clarify: my boss has very bad memory and she likes to blame people. It was only yesterday when my coworkers told about me having become the new scapegoat. It is not a daily occurrence; she's claimed a couple of times that I should have done something, when in reality she had forgotten to tell me about these tasks. It is a small office and everyone knows which days I have off, so my coworkers didn't tell me about it - they never believed any of her stories anyway. All claims were made only in front of three other people, we share a room, so naturally they knew I wasn't there on those days. Clogging the toilet and losing keys, however, were such remarkably stupid claims that they felt I should know. She found her keys and apologised in front of everyone, clogging the toilet was a passing remark ("oh, maybe it was her!") that she's probably already forgotten. Still, I don't want to work for someone who badmouths her employees behind their back. I am currently filling a job application - fingers crossed!

I hope everyone at your workplace finds out it was her that clogged the toilet. Seems like shit comes out of both ends for her. :/

I wish you luck in your job search, moving on to better things.

Maybe she feels threatened by you or she envies you.

So this has been happening for a while and you put up with it? If you're still there then you enjoy the dissing that she gets off on. Give 2 week notice get a job that shows more respect to the employees.

I only found out now. No-one had told me about the previous passing remarks. I am looking for a new job - but as I have rent to pay, I really cannot afford to quit before I have something else lined up.

Have you had a one on one with her? I would have immediately asked to have a sit down with her privately to discuss these issues. It does not have to be an attack on her but should discuss your concerns about anyone, especially your manager speaking negatively behind your back or really at all. It would be best if she has concerns regarding your behavior she contact you directly and ask before saying anything to your coworkers. Suggest that she write all tasks down so that there is proof of her asking and so that nobody forgets.

Well at least you're getting out of there

#24 - In a perfect world, people would express their concerns and feelings to their bosses, as well as make kind suggestions. And their bosses would listen to them and act accordingly, and everyone would be happy. In the real world, many superiors would deny their mistakes and further punish the employees who pointed out the shortcomings. If so far she has resorted to talking behind my back, rather than calling/e-mailing (or waiting till my next workday) and asking directly why something didn't get done, I do not think she is going to have an honest conversation with me. She has been running that department for 20 years - if she hasn't learned anything about good management by now, I don't think she'll change.

#24 I don't know why you were thumbed down, you gave an excellent comment with sound advice (not always practical but good in principle and good practice).

Good luck, and may your next boss be sane.

sounds like something my science teacher would do
