Today I discovered the source of the foul smell in my garage. My freezer shit the bed with 50 pounds of meat in it. FML

jcarter25 tells us more.

I'm from southern Indiana in the US. When something shits the bed it means something malfunctioned or something went horribly wrong. And, believe me, horrible is and understatement. I had to wear a respirator while I cleaned this up!

I think it's a southern USA setting. For what I've read, it comes from the fact that a persons bowels release on death, and that they were in their deathbed already. So they shit the (death) bed. But it can also refer to a major failure in an object, coming back to the shitting in the bed due to some sort of illness or lack of muscle control. In short- "shit the bed" means broken.

50 pounds of meat.. sorry for your lo$$.

We're docking you points for inappropriate and confusing usage of the phrase "shit the bed." You really shit the bed on this one.

Let me guess. Australian? "shit the bed" common usage here.

except australians dont use pounds.

Ha, didn't notice the pound. Obviously Gt Britain, we do have a lot of common sayings with them. Always confuses the yanks.

Except, in this case, pounds doesn't mean currency, it means weight.

Yes because we all know that vegetables don't go bad! And nobody asked/cares about you being vegan

Dude. People comment with personal opinions and preferences on this site all the time. Don't be rude.

Seems like an appropriate expression in this situation.

Homeowners insurance covers things like that sometimes, you should check your policy.

"Shit the Bed" is a very common phrase here in New Zealand (Australia too I believe). It basically just means it broke down (spectacularly).
