Today, after spending six months completely repainting and redecorating our new home, I finally finished the last touches and went to remove the masking tape. Off came the tape, along with huge blotches of plasterwork. FML

Hey all. OP here. First of all I'm glad this was posted, because when the first blotch came off, I was thinking 'Oh NO! This is so FML!' and yeah - here it is :) And then - to clear up a few things: 1. This is not my first language and 'masking tape' was just what google translater told me 'Malerkrepp' means in English. Anyways: it was the right kind of tape, we used it on the whole house and it worked everywhere else except this particular wall because 2. there was a strange kind of 'wax' paint under a whole lot of other layers that apparently was not fit to be re-painted. Ours is a very old house and we didn't know the former owners used this. But I'm a lucky one. My fiancé filled the gaps in with painter's filling yesterday and after repainting all of it tonight I hope we will truly be done. Finally. And 3. I certainly didn't leave the tape on for half a year! This is just the amount of time we have been working on the whole project. #70 : I loved your comment! Thank you, this really helped and it's exactly what we are doing. Have a nice day everyone! :)

Isn't that what they made Crown Moulding for? To hide your trim mistakes?? And 6 months is way too long!! Good luck!

Crown moulding isnt exactly easy to install espically if you going for a stained wood crown. If you are painting the crown you can have slightly larger gaps just fill and paint. But with stained would your cuts and angles have to be VERY precise. Not everyone can do crown moulding properly.

Maybe trying painters tape instead of making tape...?

Happened to me this summer, but it wasn't too much. Never leave it for too long.

*George Forman voice* dumb ass, you never leave tape on for longer than a max of 24hrs

I'm not gonna pay a lot for this, dumbass! You're like a lean, green, dumbass machine! ;)

From one never-ending project worker to another - I feel your pain. We remodeled our bathroom, kitchen, dining room living room and bedroom (which is now a nursery) all in the last couple years. NONE of these rooms are 100% done. I hate painting - I make my wife do it since she's the one who wants things different colors. She'll put down tape, paint, then immediately remove the tape. Otherwise she'll use something as a guard (like a large drywall knife).

The translation was probably correct. Masking tape is the proper type of tape to use, and painter's tape is just masking tape with a different name. Some of the "painter's tapes" are designed for specific purposes, but it's still masking tape.

It often happens where the paint covered the tape. As you pull the tape, it lifts scales of paint. I use a cutter to mark a line along the side of the tape prior to removing it. That way, when you pull it off, it won't lift the paint off anymore.

next time, use an exacto knife if the paint already dried. even on crappy surfaces, thaat usually does the trick

They make painters tape for a reason
