Today, my boyfriend proposed to me with the prettiest, most simple ring I have ever seen. I called my sister to tell her the good news, and her response was, "I know. He had me steal the ring from Claire's." FML

One time I was at Claire's when these two chubby faces girls who looked like they were in 6th grade were walking out the door when I noticed a pair of earrings stuffed towards the back of her hood. Naively, I thought they fell from the rack so I pointed it out to her and they gave me a death glare and slowly put the earrings back. They obviously were trying to steal them, kids can easily get away with stealing jewelry now.

Everyone is saying don't marry him because he's cheap. But think about it, its more likely that he doesn't have enough money and he really loves OP. Yeah, he asked her sister to steal it, but maybe she's a theif and he knew she had lower chances of getting caught. You don't know the story so don't judge him!

In that case it is probably better to just propose without a ring, or save up until he can get one. And I'm not trying to judge, but if he doesn't have enough money to buy even a cheap ring from Claire's, then he is most likely not in any position to be getting married. I also would not want to marry someone who made me an accessory to a theft, but some people may feel differently I suppose.

#18 It's not so much that he is broke and we shouldn't judge him for that, it's the fact that he would propose with a STOLEN ring. That the ring was stolen from Claire's or Tiffany's is not relevant, the point is it was robbed. And even worse, he asked her sister to steal it (btw, what was she thinking?). No one has to spend a fortune on a ring. I picked my engagement ring, it's very simple and cost $30 simply because I couldn't care less about diamonds (and yes I'm a girl :)) and I'd rather spend money on the wedding and honeymoon.

Bet that ring looks "hot" on your finger. It would be criminal to say no. I'm sure he stole your heart with his proposal. So many young people get married too quickly and wind up divorced, but I would give you 25 to life.

Get some standards, #45. OP should be happy with a loser boyfriend who won't even spend $10 on a ring so he has to rope someone else into stealing it? I don't even think you can complain about judging the size of the "rock" when the "rock" is probably made out of plastic.

45, Claire's rings really are horrible though. Once you get past a certain age, you kind of lose the ability to overlook cheap metal that turns your finger green and breaks pretty quickly. Plus, if you can't afford a ring, how will you be able to afford a wedding, a house together, any future children etc etc? You're right, it's not about the size of the ring, but OP's boyfriend obviously isn't in a very good financial position, he didn't tell her that the ring was stolen and dragged her sister into theft. Personally, I'd rather be proposed to with no ring at all than a stolen one, even if he pinched it from the most expensive jewellery shop in the world. It would feel a little tainted...
