No rest

Today, I'd booked a day off work so I could sit and read books all day. I told my wife this, and her response was basically, "Well since you're at home not doing anything important, here’s a list of jobs that need doing." I wasn’t aware enjoying reading counted as doing nothing important. FML

While I agree with most of what you said, I would disagree with reading not being a priority. Self-care is very important, and that seems to be how OP does it. There are other extenuating factors of course, like how often does OP take time for themself? Is it so much so that it interferes with their chores? But, if OP never gets self-care time, I’d argue that’s more important right now than a list of housework.

This is impossible to decide if FYL or YDI - we don't have enough information. Are those things important, did you promise to do them half a year ago, are you helping in the household on daily bases, is your wife also working, can these things be done by anyone else, etc. It's good to read, of course, but many times it shouldn't be a priority.

Taking care of yourself mustn’t be a way to avoid your duties.

"Important" is a subjective word. Reading for pleasure may seem frivolous to her compared to some of the chores that need to be done.

I have to agree. Books are some of the best things to ever be created and are practically sacred in my book.
