Is he wrong though?

By Impossible - 03/08/2025 12:00 - Poland - Warsaw

Today, a friend who works for the power company said, "Nuclear energy is clean and safe, hydro power is great, but we also need coal and gas, and wind and solar are dogshit." Again, he works for the power company. How does a so-called expert get it all so wrong? FML

Same thing different taste

What does he do for the power company? Is he an engineer or does he work in billing? Also, anyone can have an opinion you disagree with.

because he is right wind and solar aren’t as reliable and consistent in their power distribution. look at Texas when the wind mills froze. they don’t have storage capacity enough for the city’s they try to power and rely on other forms of power as a back up and both need crazy amounts of fossil fuels to make just because you go wind or solar doesn’t mean you don’t use fossil fuels

However, Texas is down South, and if Texans installed solar panels on their rooftops, they could power their house way cheaper than with their current overpriced electricity.

even if we pretend that’s true that might work for Texas but not other states that don’t get enough sunshine. not to mention even Texas has cloudy days and there isn’t enough storage capacity available too supply consistent power

The main reasons Texas froze was the lack of grid connectivity to other states (because... freedom?) and the fact that the gas generators basically froze. The wind turbines were fine for the most part.

that’s to my point since they didn’t have a back up source of power and then froze they were unreliable and with no ability to store power to bridge the gap it was a giant outage

Well he's mostly right. YOU'RE scared of nuclear because you only ever hear about nuclear disasters (that fear is making billions for fossil fuel companies) and not a word on any potential good they do. Wind and solar are too unreliable to be primary energy sources for reasons we all understand. Whether they're "dogshit" is up to opinion but I don't really see why we can't have multiple things at once.

Wind and solar alone are fine as long as you have a well-connected grid and a modest amount of storage (batteries and pumped hydro). There are a number of detailed studies published in IEEE journals that detail how this would work (I'm an electrical engineer). Poland is very dependent on coal at present, but even there the tide is turning. Wind and solar especially are but far the cheapest source of electricity now.
