I think we've all been ghosted and have ghosted people too. It's not the most tactful way to deal with things, but it makes room for better things.

I can understand ghosting someone if you've only gone on one date or didn't even meet. However after dating for 3 years ghosting is not the answer. At that point the other person deserves to know they are being broken up with.
