**** the lifescript

Today, my twice-divorced boomer mother made another passive-aggressive remark about my partner and I not being married, despite our 13-year relationship. What is this, 1950? We don't care about marriage, deal with it. FML

Reminds me of the Doug Stanhope bit "If marriage didn't exist, would you invent it? Would you go "Baby, this shit we got together? It's so good we gotta get the government in on this shit. We can't just share this commitment between us. We need judges and lawyers involved in this shit, baby. It's hot!""

It's the year 2021, where tax breaks and major medical decisions are still a pretty good reason to be married to someone you plan to stay with, unless you'd prefer your passive-aggressive mother to be making all those decisions, since right now they're going to ignore your partner and ask her or your father, as they are the only ones with any legal ties to you. Heck, they won't even allow your partner stay in the room with you, as they are no relation to you whatsoever at this point.

actually OP can designate his partner as the one to make any and all medical decisions, and cut mommy and daddy right out.

Wills, Palimony agreement, living will, all these can set their life partner as their caretaker should anything happen to them. Marriage is antiquated and not needed to give all rights to your medicals and financials to a partner. My partner and I have this set up so we know it's doable. =)

I'm curious as to why after 13 years you're still letting her get to you about it.

I mean, if she wants to be petty, you can always gently tell her that maybe if she could keep a marriage, you'd be more keen on it. 🥰 For real though, do whatever you feel is best. No one can tell you how to be happy except for YOU.
