Did you fall asleep? I’m trying to figure out how you couldn’t have realized something was wrong before 8 hours passed by.
OP - That sounds like a phobia of mine coming true! I have to assume OP either fell asleep (or passed out) to wind up a whole 8 hours away from where you were supposed to be. A long time ago, for work I was traveling from Eindhoven in the Netherlands (where Philips headquarters is located) to Darmstadt in Germany (where Bosh has facilities) by train - The Rhine Express. It was a beautiful trip. I do not speak Dutch or German however and while I could read the platform signs I could not clearly understand the announcements. So as we got close to Darmstadt I would have to stick my head out of the train door (while keeping my luggage close) to read the signs. I was very worried about missing my station. But I made it there and got off at the right station.
How do you even get 8hs the wrong way in the UK? Were you in the middle and didn't realize it was going north and getting more scottish instead of going south and getting less scottish? Google says Aberdeen to London is only 10hrs, so you're pretty dang close to the complete opposite side of the country, and that's something you should have noticed in advance...
Och nae laddie!
