Dogs will adapt to new names even at three years old- our latest adoption went by "Breanna" for three years, and now happily responds to the name we gave her- "Pumpkin." Chances are a puppy will be even easier to readjust to a new name. The real lesson here is that you know not to trust your mother in law with animals and small children unless the need is dire.
