Today, after spending thousands of dollars and several years pursuing a higher education so I could get a high paying job doing something that requires skill and brainpower, I finally got my first job offer after months of searching. I will be cleaning houses. FML

i'm there with you too, OP. the economy really isn't what we were promised in the bright shiny future of the 90s. we've all been pushed along through school following the blind dream that we'd get good grades in high school, get into a good university - either applied science or liberal arts, graduate, and get a really great professional job. if only we knew 10 years ago that it wouldn't still work that way.

what did you major in? if it was ___ studies then ydi

what's with the mindset that right of school you're supposed to be making bank? school gives you the educational tools to possibly do so. now it's time to take your skills and work hard to make sure that happens. you know what they say; now it's time to pay your dues. you'll get there. now it's up to you to earn it. no ones gonna give it to you

After reading some of these comments, I really have to thank some of you guys for being realistic and encouraging. Some comments were pretty harsh, but true. I'm in the same situation as the OP and some of the people here. Did the college thing, graduated, have a humongous debt to pay back, went back to doing retail part time because of lack of jobs and just being in a crappy town. Even though it's part time, I'm thankful that I even have a job at the moment (still trying to get a second part time job, though; isn't working out). It's just parents and old teachers who stress me out nonstop and constantly make me feel guilty because I'm not working in my related field.
