Content almost refused by staff

Today, a classmate of mine was taking out what I thought was a retainer, as it looked like a wire going across his front teeth. I jokingly said "taking out your dentures?" he replied "yep," and pulled it out to show he had no front teeth due to a birth defect. They were dentures. FML

You can't unsay it, obviously, but he doesn't sound too upset over it. Just apologize for the joke, say you'll try to avoid them in the future, and try to avoid them in the future. Also, don't make a big, public deal out of the apology, he's likely to find that more upsetting than an accidental bad joke.
