I could be totally wrong here, but sounds like your relationship has been bad for a while and maybe you thought proposing to her would fix that? (or else she is really sneaky and made out like everything was great). Just be glad you got out of the relationship when you did, it sounded like a bad one (to whether either she was sneaky or you had the wrong idea). Chin up :).
