My husband sneezed; it startled our daughter and she started crying. A loud sudden noise is all it takes; it is all part of having a baby. I don't know how old your daughter is but just hug her, tell her she is ok and that you're sorry. Ours went right back to playing after that like nothing happened.
I don't even see how this is an issue unless your wife is psychotic. Balloons pop, children cry, welcome to earth.
Is it just me that thinks 'smack' & 'gently' don't really go together. lol

Stuff like that will happen. I hope your wife knows and understands that. And hopefully you can explain to your little girl that it was an accident and you didn't mean to scare her. Good luck.
