Maybe he had somebody on the side, since you were doing marriage counselling and he just didn't deem it important enough?
As someone who grew up with parents who stayed together but were miserable, it's better for you two to move on from each other instead of him faking being happy for the kids. Sorry OP.
Seriously. My parents divorced when I was 7 and my sibling was 3, and as much as it was frustrating to go from home to home every week, among other things, I know we would have been a million times more miserable if my parents had tried to force themselves to be together. You tried to make it work with marriage counseling, but there's only so much you can do. Your kids will be better off if you don't continue to force the relationship.
