How dull! Social anxiety is treatable, get some help. We've all been in this situation: either register an aisle seat early enough, or accept the fact that sometimes you'll have to wake a stranger.
I don't think it's about social anxiety, lol. OP just wanted to respect them and didn't want to wake them up from their sleep...
#2 I think it is about social anxiety. A normal person would not have a problem waking someone up if they needed to go to the bathroom. Having to get up to pee is not being disrespectful, it's a biological necessity. Next time OP, just get up. Depending on the time of day of the flight, they may have just been napping lightly or closing their eyes because they are bored. Having been on many 7hr+ flights, I tend to close my eyes and nap lightly to pass the time. It wouldn't bother me if you woke me up. Next time you are flying, pretend its me you are sitting next to. As long as you are not getting up every 10min, it's fine.
YDI for not waking them up.
