To be fair this isn't an fml really - you did the right thing. That is a really creepy way to phrase that question and I don't blame you for not helping him out. The fact that you later discovered he's an Ice cream man (and therefore was apparently asking an innocent question) doesn't change that fact that AT THE TIME you had no way of knowing that. This is just a misunderstanding rather than a FML.
Better safe than sorry. And fake ice cream vans are very much a scam used by child predators. If you see him again, ask him why he wants to know, then for proof of employment. He may get the hint he is coming across as creepy, and you'll also have information that leads straight to him if he his behavior around children seems inappropriate. Also won't hurt to ask other parents in the community to give their kids the public safety talk, as well as give any of your own the same talk. Don't go anywhere with strangers, don't get in unfamiliar vehicles, if an adult or older kid is doing something or trying to do something that makes them uncomfortable get help, someone is trying to physically move them or assault them to scream 'fire' since people pay more attention to that, etc. Personally, I say good on you and the cashier for not telling him about where kids hang out without a reason to trust him.
