The only explanation I can think of is that the guy's parents had a daughter that they put up for adoption. That would explain why OP "revealed" it to their mother (who recognized the girl's name and figured out she was her daughter) and OP found it out herself (probably when the mother told her) Sounds crazy but well, anything's possible...
