Why is everyone saying the husband cheated? It's possible that he just wasn't a virgin before they got together. Though I suppose he's more likely to admit to that than cheating...

Actually, yes it is! There are studies showing they've isolated both strains of the virus from both oral lesions and genital lesions. Maybe this doctor hasn't kept up with current studies and isn't aware of this.
