Today, I was excited to get my first writing assignment since starting law school. I found out that I have to write a paper defending free speech. This wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have to defend the Westboro Baptist Church and if I weren't a former Marine. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.

Yeah, part of being a lawyer is finding ways to defend people who are the scum of the earth. That's why they make the big bucks

Welcome to due process. Enjoy your stay.

Talk to your prof. I'm sure he can give you a different topic.

That church is beyond Jesus's help...

Whether you agree with what they are doing or not, free speech is free speech. As a former Marine you fought to defend our freedoms. What people choose to do with them is not your concern.

no one said you have to defend what they're saying/doing. All you have to say is that it's their RIGHT to free speech that they're allowed to do what they do. I don't like them either, but I had to defend them for a class assignment as well and it wasn't hard or degrading. As a marine you should know it's imperative to protect everyones rights even the stupid people. If you can't understand that then you don't deserve to be a marine.

You don't have to believe it. As terrible as they are, it's legal. I'm proud to live in a country where everyone (no matter how stupid, hateful, or ignorant) can voice their opinion. But still, f**k the WBC

If you can't hack doing it as a writing assignment, you'll never be able to hack it when you actually have to defend some arrogant loudmouth's rights in court.

You are NEVER a "former" Marine!
