Today, I called in to my girlfriend's favorite radio station to propose. After spending what seemed like an eternity telling her how much I love her and I want to spend the rest of my life with her, she took a deep breath, said, "How about no?" and hung up. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste

Today, after my girlfriend telling me for years that she would marry me in a heartbeat, I finally proposed. She said no. FML
Today, I proposed. She immediately said no and then broke up with me. FML
Today, after pouring my heart out to my girlfriend of four years through a speech that took me three weeks to write, and then proposing, she responded, "Eh, why not." FML
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend. She promptly had a panic attack and screamed, "No!" FML
Happy now?
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend while we were on my couch having a romantic moment. She seemed incredibly excited when she saw the ring and put it on. The way she bolted out the door tells me I'm not going to see her again. FML
Today, I was on the phone with my girlfriend. Just as she said "I love you", the credit on my phone runs out. She now thinks that I've purposely hung up on her. She refuses to speak to me until I tell her the real reason I hung up. FML
Today, I asked my girlfriend to marry me. She pretended not to hear me. FML
Today, I was cuddling with the girl I've been seeing for the past few months. She was saying how much she liked me and how much I meant to her. Reciprocating those feelings, I asked her to be my girlfriend. It was a HARD no for her. Then she drove me an hour and a half home. FML
Today, I proposed to my girlfriend of 6 years. She said no. Why? She's already married. FML

When will people learn? You do not ask this question unless you already know the answer will be yes. If you do not know someone well enough to know their answer, then you do not know them well enough to get engaged.

well if OP had been with her for a long time and they loved each other then maybe OP thought she would say yes. I completly disagree with your thinking.

No, I agree with 46. The proposal itself can still be spontaneous and special, but the actual decision to spend your lives together should be carefully worked out over the course of a relationship. There's no reason it should be a stressful ultimatum.
