Today, when I tried to break up with my girlfriend of 2 years, she had no idea we were even dating. She thought of all the movies, dinners, and "sleepovers" I had with her was because we were such great friends. FML

Sometimes loving is the hardest thing
Today, I just had to break up with my girlfriend of 2 years, who I've been friends with for the past 12 years. She chased me in high school and we dated before for almost 2 years, but now I finally see what I should have: She's still in love her ex, who abandoned her 5 years ago. I've been living in another man's shadow. FML

Seems like you dodged a major bullet. I wonder if you would have proposed to her, she would suggest to be married as friends.

While I imagine the situation being really awkward for you, I do have to ask... did you ever actually ask her to be your girlfriend? Unless you asked, talked about it, and she said yes then that's a YDI in a way. Still sucks though, sorry OP.

Honestly, YDI for not defining the relationship in 2 whole years.

How do you know they didn't? Whilst it is plausible that they never defined it or spoke about it, it's also just as plausible for her to say that as a coping mechanism or to have said yes in the beginning, but be a ditzy dumb girl and not realise. I agree with a comment further down, we need more information before voting on it

Is it possible she was just saving face because you were dumping her? If so it certainly seems to have worked, she's got you all rattled when you were the one behind the break up anyway.

Dodged a bullet there OP!!

How is this an FML? You wanted to break up with your girlfriend, she claims she was never your girlfriend, therefore you don't have to break up with anyone. It's a win-win situation here.

This us by far the best example of being friend zoned that I have ever seen.

Honestly, I need more information before I can get judgy on this one. If you never had the conversation with her to define the relationship in those two years, YDI for assuming a fuckbuddy is your girlfriend. If you had the conversation with her to define the relationship, FYL.

I agree. Sleeping with someone does not equal dating, so there seem to be some lacking in the communication.

Wait... What? How? That wasn't made clear at any point over 2 years!?

All those guys saying "Bullet dodged!" have no idea what the Hell they're talking about. They're just mindless idiots who probably post "bullet dodged!" about 30x's throughout the day since they lack any other original thoughts in their heads. Moving on, I don't really see this as an FML because, for two years, you've had what sounds like a pretty good relationship - Just one, of course, that didn't entail something 'permanent'. You both lived in the moment, enjoyed one another's company (she obviously enjoyed yours because why else would she spend time with you?), and even got some sexual gratification out of it. My condolences that she didn't take your relationship with the levity as you had but perhaps that's your own fault? Communication is key. You can't just go around assuming if the discussion about where you two stood never occurred.
