Today, my boyfriend of 3 years left me because apparently I'm "too beautiful and he can no longer handle other guys always trying to flirt with me." FML
Today, my girlfriend told me she was leaving me for another man. Devastated, I asked what he had that I didn't. Apparently, "a big penis and a stable job" mean more to her than two years of love and dedication. FML
Today, I heard my boyfriend telling a female friend that his ex was so gorgeous and out of his league that it made him feel inadequate, and so he now only dates within reach. She told him he's hot enough to have anyone he wants. 30 seconds later they were tongue-deep in each other's throat. FML
Today, my girlfriend broke up with me, because I was apparently "too good" for her. FML
Today, my girlfriend confessed that she was scared that she was more in love with me than I was in her, and that she was afraid I would leave her. So she left me instead. I'd been thinking about proposing. FML
Today, after supporting my girlfriend for over a year in her endeavour to lose weight, exercise more, and eat better, my now-slender girlfriend dumped me, because she's found someone "better" than me. FML
Today, my girlfriend told me she is only going out with me because I look like the person she really wants to go out with. FML
Today, my girlfriend, who's been in relationship with me for almost two years, told me she's worried that she's going to leave me for another rich guy "in the future", so to prevent that, she's gonna leave me right now. FML
Today, the girl I’ve moved mountains and bent over backwards for chose another man over me. When I asked her why him and not me, she said, “He’s more attractive.” But she sure found me “attractive” when I spent $20k on her for gifts, favors, etc. She put me in the friend-zone, except when I took my wallet out. FML
Today, my wife told me that she was leaving me for someone with more hair. FML

I think it's both unrealistic and egotistical to assume that you are the objectively best match for an SO. I think that almost everyone would rather have a person who started out better looking, more talented, or more understanding than who they have. Most of all, I think that "settling" is a normal and healthy part of human relationships. What makes the person that you settle for more valuable than anyone else in the world is not their objective strengths and weaknesses but the time and trust that you both put into the relationship. A new person won't know that you hate pistachios or that you love having your neck rubbed after a long day at work. What keeps people together in a time of doubt is a fear of loss. I obviously don't know much about the op and his girlfriend but I think that some people are afraid to admit how much they fear being alone and so they stay with who will have them even if they know that they could have a chance with someone "better". To me this seems to apply to both the op and his girlfriend.

#89, you are right, the value is in the energy and time, of both of you. This girl is either trying to get a rise out of the guy or truly is a despicable person. Either way he should run to the nearest exit, not walk, and find someone else to share his heart and life with. If someone means so little to you that you would say this, you aren't worth the effort.
