Maybe it took him so long for financial reasons. He would spend what he had for one project, then had to wait to save up some more money in order to start another project. Also, he could have run into unexpected problems along the way that ended up costing him more to correct it. Or, he had no idea what he was doing and wanting to do things right, he made sure to take it slow. Making sure he fully understood what the hell he was doing before he attempted any renovations so he wouldn't cause a disaster.
