Today, I went to a restaurant with my boyfriend. After dessert, he went to the bathroom so I quickly called the waiter over and paid the bill, thinking it was a nice gesture. When he returned, he broke up with me for "emasculating" him. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Mixed signals
Today, my boyfriend took me out to a fancy dinner. Halfway through, he said he wanted to break up. I started crying, but the whole restaurant thought he'd proposed, and started clapping. FML
Today, my boyfriend asked me out to dinner, which we never do. While at the restaurant he gets down on his knees, looks me in the eyes, and pulls out a little box. He opens it and inside is a note that says 'We're Done.' He then leaves me at the restaurant with the bill and the $2.00 box. FML
Today, I went on a date with a guy who seemed to be quite the gentleman. I was proven wrong when he told me to "shut it" during dinner, stiffed me on the bill, and then left me at the restaurant so he could get his own taxi home. FML
Today, my boyfriend took me to dinner. As we waited for our food he took my hand and said, "I think we should break up." When I got outside, my tire was flat. FML
Today, I treated my boyfriend to an expensive dinner using the last of my paycheck. I had to excuse myself to the bathroom a few minutes in. I came back to find my plate empty. His excuse was, "I didn't want the food to get cold." FML
Today, after dating a guy for 2 months, things seemed to be going well. I offered to buy dinner and trusted he would keep in mind that I'm a college student on a budget. He picked the restaurant, ran up the bill over $100, made me pay, and dumped me right after. FML
Today, my girlfriend and I were out to dinner. She had to use the bathroom, so she went, but the food came while she was in there. She came out, yelling at me for ordering the food to come that exact time, then she broke up with me. FML
The old switcheroo
Today, my fiance's divorce was finalized and we went out to dinner to celebrate. I stepped away to use the bathroom, then came back to a note on the table saying, "I'm going to enjoy single life, thanks!" He left me with the bill. FML
Today, I went on a dinner date with the guy I like. He ate all his food then started eating off my plate, going on to eat over half of my food. When the bill came, he made me pay for it. FML
Today, I went on a date at a restaurant with a guy. When he promised I wouldn't have to pay the bill, I didn't think he meant we'd be dining and dashing. FML

Maybe I'm just a cheap ass but whenever someone pays for my food, I'm happy.

Looks like you killed the Golden Goose. At least you probably have a nice pair of testicles to keep in your purse.

I can understand the sentiment but that's a major over-reaction! If you told him it was just a gesture to show that you came out to be with him rather than for a free dinner & he could get the bill next time then I can't see how he could complain. I can only conclude that he's an arse and was bound to find something to break up for sooner or later. Why is everyone on FML so sensitive to the tiniest little thing?

Did he invite you? If that is the case I see his point of being upset. Breaking up might have been a bit too much, but people are different.

he shouldn't even be upset. at the very most, he is allowed to be a little miffed. realistically he should think it's nice that his girlfriend wanted to pay for something for him.

Watch out for guys like that. Wanting to make you feel as if you're not equal and that you somehow owe him. He's probably upset that since he didn't pay for dinner, you're no longer obligated to have sex with him (especially if you ordered the lobster.) :P

Agreed. I had a boyfriend like that who was incredibly insecure about himself and acted on it by demeaning me. Probably best that this couple broke up; this incident would have been a huge red flag.

Yeah that totalllllyyyy makes sense. Lets see if he was a guy like that he would have been like **** yeah free meal then guilt tripped the gf into having sex with him cause if she tried to say oh but baby I paid for dinner he can be like I know sweetheart but I was going to pay and honestly honey I would much rather have paid I like spoiling you I'm kinda upset that I didn't get to take pay for the nice dinner I took you out for. Also how the hell is him paying not making her equal **** most women get pissed at a guy for not paying but when a guy gets upset bout a girl paying when every guy ever has been told when you take a girl out you pay suddenly it's because he can't get sex so obviously he must think women are beneath him then? because that seems to be the message you're sending. Also if your bf takes you out for dinner and pays and shows you a good time damn straight you owe him, now if you aren't actually dating but you have gone on a few dates and what not but aren't together then no you don't owe him anything but come on if it's your bf you owe him a little it's called being curtious. But like I said if he was one of the douche guys then dumping her and not getting sex is like the last resort once he realized he defs wasn't getting any that night.

51-Holy ******* run-on sentence. Maybe if you constructed your sentences correctly, you'd get your point across.

"...damn straight you owe him" (Get out of here with that bull shit!) Hey, your experiences are your experiences, not mine. I've dealt with guys that think just because they bought me dinner etc... that I owe them (just like you apparently do) I'm on no one's terms but my own. Every/most dates, I offer to pay at least the tip or at a movie I buy the snacks. I prefer the guy to know I'm with him for him, not what I can get him to buy me. What I said was somewhat in humour but with things "I" had to deal with.

Here's the TL;DR version of #51's comment: I'm a sexist asshat who has never passed an English course. You're welcome.

My boyfriend insists on paying for everything, because that's his way of showing me he cares. But I'm like Enslaved, I'm not with him for free meals, clothing, trips, etc., I'm with him for him, and I make sure he knows that. Yes, we have a great "bedroom life," but unlike 50, my boyfriend doesn't EXPECT it from me just because we went out for dinner and a movie. That's one of the most ridiculous things I think I have ever heard!

I don't think he should have broken up with you but I do get the feeling that you knew he disliked having the ladies pay. Heart was in a good place but next time try a backrub.

I don't know why guys feel emasculated, I would have been like hell ya now you drive me around and open my door for me.
lelo007 11
"Now you drive me around and open my door for me." I got such a good laugh out of that! My boyfriend had a little too much to drink the other night, so of course I ended up as DD. I got in the car and he just stood there, and after about a minute I asked what his problem was. He said, "I always open the door for you, why won't you open it for me?" He wouldn't budge until I got out and opened his door. He thought it was cute....
ICastillo 25
Yeah see I think it would be awesome if a girl did that for me.
lelo007 11
Well, doll, if you and I dated, I'd drive you around and open your doors. You seem totally worth it.
ICastillo 25
Ha well thanks, you sound like a catch yourself.
buckdharma 38
Hold the door open for him so it don't hit him in the ass.

I don't think it has anything to do with the year he thinks he's living in. I had a male friend while i was in the service that just thought of himself as a gentleman and refused to let me open doors for him. He also believed that a man should pay for a ladies meals even if you weren't romantically involved. Best solution for OP and the ex if they get back together is that if she wishes to pay for meals then make sure they are delivered to your place before he arrives and let him pay when you go out. I'm sure he wouldn't be oppose to you purchasing groceries for a meal and you could both prepare it together.

was it really your action or the way your mustache brushes off his cheeks?

It appears that some guys didn't get the memo that it's the 21st century....nice gesture of appreciation from Wounded Ego.
TheDrifter 24
No, we just rejected it as propaganda. Once I found out how the 21st century works I went back to living in 1912.
