Today, I went to a restaurant with my boyfriend. After dessert, he went to the bathroom so I quickly called the waiter over and paid the bill, thinking it was a nice gesture. When he returned, he broke up with me for "emasculating" him. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Mixed signals
Today, my boyfriend took me out to a fancy dinner. Halfway through, he said he wanted to break up. I started crying, but the whole restaurant thought he'd proposed, and started clapping. FML
Today, my boyfriend asked me out to dinner, which we never do. While at the restaurant he gets down on his knees, looks me in the eyes, and pulls out a little box. He opens it and inside is a note that says 'We're Done.' He then leaves me at the restaurant with the bill and the $2.00 box. FML
Today, I went on a date with a guy who seemed to be quite the gentleman. I was proven wrong when he told me to "shut it" during dinner, stiffed me on the bill, and then left me at the restaurant so he could get his own taxi home. FML
Today, my boyfriend took me to dinner. As we waited for our food he took my hand and said, "I think we should break up." When I got outside, my tire was flat. FML
Today, I treated my boyfriend to an expensive dinner using the last of my paycheck. I had to excuse myself to the bathroom a few minutes in. I came back to find my plate empty. His excuse was, "I didn't want the food to get cold." FML
Today, after dating a guy for 2 months, things seemed to be going well. I offered to buy dinner and trusted he would keep in mind that I'm a college student on a budget. He picked the restaurant, ran up the bill over $100, made me pay, and dumped me right after. FML
Today, my girlfriend and I were out to dinner. She had to use the bathroom, so she went, but the food came while she was in there. She came out, yelling at me for ordering the food to come that exact time, then she broke up with me. FML
The old switcheroo
Today, my fiance's divorce was finalized and we went out to dinner to celebrate. I stepped away to use the bathroom, then came back to a note on the table saying, "I'm going to enjoy single life, thanks!" He left me with the bill. FML
Today, I went on a dinner date with the guy I like. He ate all his food then started eating off my plate, going on to eat over half of my food. When the bill came, he made me pay for it. FML
Today, I went on a date at a restaurant with a guy. When he promised I wouldn't have to pay the bill, I didn't think he meant we'd be dining and dashing. FML

Maybe I'm just a cheap ass but whenever someone pays for my food, I'm happy.

I wouldn't feel proud not paying but I don't think it's worth breaking up over....it's his loss.

The idiot should've been grateful. What a stupid thing to break up over.

Sounds like a chauvinistic asshole to me. Don't let his kind stain the rest of the male sex. He's just one of us. If I were him, I would have said "Thanks, that was really generous, but, really, you didn't have to pay." I'd be thankful that I didn't have to spend my money on something. It was a kind favor, not a statement of his masculinity.

There's nothing wrong with paying for a woman's meals or opening doors if you feel that's the gentlemanly thing to do. The problem is, there was nothing gentlemanly about breaking up with someone for damaging your inflated sense of pride in being a "gentleman," by trying to do something nice. Be a gentleman if that's who you are- it's not lame or outdated if it's sincere. But don't be a jerk in order to protect your front as a "man."

If he's too insecure to handle you paying for a meal, screw him. You're better off with a guy who treats you like an equal instead of insisting on rigid gender roles.

Old fashioned isn't always a bad thing. Op's boyfriend may be a whiney douche, but old fashioned courtesy and common sense would eliminate half the fmls posted if they were widespread.

Gah, the societal rules are changing. I'm going to have to turn in my "Chivalrous Man, 1895 Edition" handbook and learn a while new set of rules. This is just unacceptable.
