Today, I was curious as to whether or not my mom was off of her medication. When I asked her, she pulled a knife on me. Looks like I got my answer. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, while I was cutting myself some watermelon, my mom walked in. I could tell she hadn't taken her medication in a while because she freaked out, grabbed the knife, and burst into tears before yelling at me, saying I could have cut myself and bled out. FML
Worth it
Today, my mom thought it would be funny to wake me up with a monster mask on, holding a knife, and screaming, "I'm going to kill you!" My first response was to punch her in the face then kick her. Guess who's grounded for a month. FML
Zapped
Today, my mom decided to try her new taser on me while I was asleep on the couch. FML
Spooked
Today, I woke up in the middle of the night to a figure holding a knife above me. After I screamed in terror, the figure burst into laughter. It was my mom. She did this as payback for me not washing the dishes last night after making food. FML
Today, my mom took away my medication. She's afraid I'll get "hooked". The medication is anti-anxiety pills. I have horrible anxiety attacks that sometimes cause me to scratch my arms until they bleed. FML
Today, while my friends were over, my mom took too many of her pills and walked around the house nude. She then bit me. FML
Today, my crazy drug-addict mother kicked me out of the house after siding with my crazy, drug-addict aunt, who'd just threatened to slit my throat. FML
Today, I told my mom I loved her and she asked if I was going to kill myself. FML
Today, my mother took a bunch of sleeping pills, then went driving. I followed her and dialed 911. Now she thinks that I was "trying to get her arrested," and she refuses to talk to me ever again. FML
Today, I received a serious concussion and several stitches to the back of my head. The attacker? My mom. FML

I have a friend who has a bipolar Mom. She gets out of hand sometimes (and if I remember right, she's done some violent things). I don't remember something like that happening, but I know how dangerous it can be to live with someone who has bipolar disorder (not from personal experience, just from what my friend has told me). It can be difficult... Hopefully you're okay. Maybe she'll rationalize soon.

well...if she pulled a knife when you asked her, it would seem like you wouldn't have to ask in the first place because she sounds psychotic and you definitely would have figured out she was off her meds.

sorry i call bullshit on this because you would have called the cops or child services instead of wasting your time posting it on fml.com. buuulllsshhhiittt

You need to contact her psychiatrist and let him/her know what happened. It sounds like your mother must stay on her medication, and depending upon her condition, they may be able to give her weekly or monthly shots, instead of pills to take. Shots are monitored, as the person actually has to come into the office to get them, and then then doctor knows for sure that the patient is taking their medication - which also makes it safer for you. Definitely don't let her know that you're checking up on her, and don't ask her anymore about if she's taking her meds because it'll provoke her. If she can't have shots for her meds, then maybe some in-office thing could still be arranged? Sometimes having the shrink know that the patient is off her meds, and him/her saying something about it, is enough, but that would only work if the person doesn't have a problem with the shrink or authority, and doesn't have paranoid delusions that you are spying on them. And #42, obviously you've never had a loved one who did something like this. Of course, if a stranger pulled a knife on you, the thing to do would be call the cops, but when you love someone that you know isn't that way when they're on their medication(s), you give them chances to straighten up - rather than trying to get them put in jail. (And threatening with a knife for a first offender wouldn't be jail, most likely, especially if the person has a history of mental illness. They'd just be sent back to their shrink.) It's difficult to be in this type of situation because it's a neurotransmitter problem in the brain, and if only the person would stay on their medication, things would be okay. But similar to an addict, there can always be a battle to keep the person on their medication because, again depending upon the condition, they think they can handle it, or feel so good they think they don't need meds anymore, or the meds stop working. It's up to the person with the condition to realize that they need to stay on meds, or that the meds aren't so good anymore. Or if the person isn't aware enough to do that, and the family hasn't written them off, it's up to the family to step in, which the OP tried to do. Remember OP, you're not your mother's keeper, and if it becomes too hard or she keeps refusing to take her medication, it's perfectly acceptable to walk away. Please check out the book, "Toxic Parents," as it helped me deal with my own situation. Good luck.
