Today, I saw my car being broken into on the street below my apartment. Too scared to stop them myself, I called the police. Before I could even tell them what was going on, they put me on hold. It was a good 5 minutes before I realized they'd hung up on me. FML

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I hit a parked car and fled because I was so scared. Four hours later, the cops showed up at my house so I broke down crying confessing everything. Turns out, they weren't there about the car I hit. They were alerting me about the string of burglaries in my neighborhood recently. FML
Today, I awoke to the sound of my neighbors attacking my car with a baseball bat accusing me of calling the cops on them. I did call the cops on them, after they screamed at me last night, drunkenly, to call the cops for them because they thought they were being robbed. FML
Today, I borrowed a roommate's car to get groceries. I came out to find the car stolen. I called the cops, and the responding officer took the info and drove me home to give the roomie the bad news in person. 15 minutes later, they found the car. I'd parked it on the opposite side of the lot. FML
Today, I woke up to the sound of my car being stolen. FML
Today, the police called because someone had turned in my wallet that was stolen. I happily drove home only to find that my house had been robbed and ransacked. FML
Today, at the gas station I work a lady called wanting to know the "password" and if I was okay. Thinking it was a prank I hung up. A couple of minutes later she called back, this time asking if I could see the cops outside and telling me I'd be alright. I saw four of 'em. I'd hit the silent alarm by accident. FML
Today, my car got stolen. While I was standing ten feet away from it. FML
Today, the police came to my door and told me about a woman who called the cops on me because she said that I had been following her in my car. We were on the highway. FML
Today, I accidentally locked my car and house keys along with my phone in my car. Then I had to break into my own house looking for the spare. Someone called the police and I had to explain that I lived there. I forgot to grab the spare when I went to talk to the police officers I locked the door behind me. FML
Today, I woke up to find my car broken into. After being upset for not hearing my car alarm go off I realized it had in the middle of the night. I had woken up and cursed the idiot who set off their alarm and put a pillow over my head, falling back to sleep shortly after. FML

1, sadly enough, this is common in San Diego. At my last job, we had to call for an ambulance every other month. I'd be on hold for a few minutes before getting thru to anyone. To OP, I'm sorry that you were hung up on. I'm surprised they didn't call you back. If someone calls 911, and hangs up, 911 calls back immediately to make sure that the individual is okay.

Normally the police only put you in a holding cell, but ever since they began outsourcing they just put people on hold now.

In CA if you call your local police dept. they can put someone on hold for a while. If you call 911, you would have almost immediate attention (that's if your life is danger, not an empty vehicle).

In the operator's defense: I have heard a bunch of stupid calls to the police about mundane things that people can use 511 for but don't. Maybe they were flooded with idiots?

511 is what you call when you or someone else isn't in a life-threatening situation, but something bad is happening... So 911 lines can be kept open for true emergencies. I called it the other day when I saw a cyclist on a dark, busy highway (illegal in TX) at 2 AM. Strange thing is 911 told me to call 511, then 511 patched me back through to 911.

That's some shitty police force. Also if you're scared, maybe learn some self defense? Seeing as the police wont help. You're lucky it was your car and not your apartment or yourself but still, better be safe than sorry.
