I made the same mistake in Honors Chemistry this year. Except in front of the whole class. :/
So don't worry; You're not alone. xD
yeah.... =|
OP YLIF...! I don't think you deserve it... xD
Hey monsters in the closet is a growing problem/epidemic. Don't make fun of your cousin for being smart and aware
because of the vast amount of information you have, you are allowed to forget the basics, that's common
Made the same mistake ttoo omg #100 :)
Seriously? Solid water. Not hard. YDI.
#3 - On 06/23/2009 at 2:03pm by legit1619
In my opinion, solid water actually usually *is* quite hard.
So, I have a tough question for you, OP, but it might help you study:
can you tell me what liquid ice is?
YDI ;)
good job there. Plz tell me your ugly too and therefore have a lower likelihood of passing on your genes.
Well I hope you're ugly too, because you can't seem to be able to spell correctly. Oh the hypocrisy.
#92 - On 06/23/2009 at 4:50pm by kspy
don't mean "you're"?
as in: "you're a douchebag who can't spell."
Pointing out when people confuse 'your' with 'you're' was once a decent reason to insult people; but now it's done so often and by so many people, it's just annoying. Give it up.
No matter how many people do a stupid thing, it is still a stupid thing.
That's why I'm not too fond of getting a PhD.
#5 - On 06/23/2009 at 2:05pm by ccyto
yeah i'm sure that is the reason.
It's okay, when you study so much you can have stupid lapses like that.
omg I agree, I hope your excuse is that u study a lot lol. cause if so, you're excused this time
It's not really a big deal--we all have stoopid moments
I agree, just a stupid lapse. Nothing to complain about. QYB.
It happens. You don't really realize what some things are at first, even if it should be obvious.
Don't see the big deal, everyone forgets something.
god canadians are dumb
#9 - On 06/23/2009 at 2:08pm by soundtribe
LOL, if that isn't a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what is.
An american would think solid water means steam.
america, canada's underwear.
Was there not an FML about an American who went into a drive-through, told their order to a garbage bin, and then started yelling at that garbage bin for not answering? And you think Canadians are dumb?! BTW, figures an FML posted by an American would have happened in a drive-through. They need to stop being such gluttonous pigs.
Tell me how. Really.
We're not America's bitch, more like your fricking maids, having to clean up messes America makes.
#125 - On 06/23/2009 at 7:47pm by Paigeth
Wow #101... please, try harder to make Canadians sound even more obnoxious and ignorant than you already have. I bet you couldn't do it.
naw naw, that's Japan.
#155 - On 06/23/2009 at 11:32pm by chanman
It's drive-thru you retarded Frenchie.
Your entire country's GDP is less than the state of California's, and you own more land than all but 2 countries.
I would probably do the same thing.
When I officially learned that people say that, "solid water, liquid water" it really bugged me, and it was like "Why not call it ice? and WATER?" The reason they didn't in my class is because, in Astronomy, most of the time they aren't referring to H20. And you've grown up with it having distinct terms for the stage it's in. It's understandable a little kid would get it without thinking about it, they aren't programed yet. It happens, but it isn't an FYL or YDI. It's more like an I've never heard this term before and my younger cousin shed new light on the situation.
Exactly... I was doing a biology test, and one of the questions (this is college mind you) was "Where does the energy used for photosynthesis come from?" And the choices were something like:
a. water
b. sunlight
c. chlorophyll
d. mitochondria
e. Krebb's Cycle
f. Calvin's cycle
Now, don't get me wrong, I knew exactly what photosynthesis is; it's the means of converting sunlight to sugar... However... I was thinking this was a trick question that was seeing how much attention we paid to calvins/krebb's cycle, so I randomly guessed between one of the two.
Naturally, had I not overthought it, I'd have picked the right answer (sunlight).
Yeah, I agree. Remember, in chemistry we have terms like "dry ice" to refer to something that is *not* H2O. Personally, I'd get "frozen water" much more quickly than "solid water," as "solid water" might mean "water with one element added that solidifies it."
Don't worry, I've done the same exact thing. #6 is right.
#12 - On 06/23/2009 at 2:13pm by purupuru
lol I didn't even know what it was. they shouldve said water in the solid state or just ice. sheesh. stupid over complicaters. >_>
you just killed it by saying your a "4th year science major".
you have just classified yourself as an idiot.
i hope you aren't pre-med, i would never trust you as my doctor.
It's the same thing as that infamous list of "scientists who accept Creationism" that includes plastic surgeons and metallurgists. Being a science major doesn't mean you know shit about another discipline, even the obvious.
got so confused for a second i thought you were wrong but then i was just thinking of soft water and hard water, then again we were never taught to call ice solid water and i only just left highschool a couple weeks ago
#16 - On 06/23/2009 at 2:15pm by Bex_dazzled
looks like you picked the wrong major there lovie.
friday1892: What's an ugly "too"?
In all seriousness, just because some has an instant "brain fart" doesn't mean they're stupid. It happens to the best of us.
OP: Really, don't beat yourself up. These kinds of things happen.
I think Friday meant that the OP should tell him/her if he was ugly as well.
Yeah, friday is just a moron and doesn't know the difference between "your" and "you're".
Apparently, my humour is lost.
Before saying such ugly things, perhaps he should learn how to use pronouns correctly.
I had a brain fart today. I started writing pheet instead of feet on a description of a picture on facebook of a chalk drawing I did in my street. I stuck with it though, pretending I did it on purpose for a "creative" effect.
So it's a brain fart. No big deal. Anyone that claims it never happens to them is a liar.
Doesn't Canada have free healthcare?
If by free you mean it's bankrupting their government... then yes they have "free" healthcare.
In the middle of studying for an aerodynamics final, I suddenly had trouble adding 7+4.
It happens.
WTF is a science major anyway? Why wouldn't you say "chem" or "bio"? You're probably a poli sci major or some BS like that.
Why would someone in political science be asked questions about "solid water"....?
Could be a general science degree.
Ahhhhh... If you want to look smart. Hide in his closet with a freaky mask and scare him. Then tell him there's no such thing as monsters......until the lights turn off. That'll keep him occupy
Everyone has moments like that...not a big deal or else you would not have even made it to 4th year.
I'm going to blow your mind here, but...
There's gaseous water too :-O
#30 - On 06/23/2009 at 2:36pm by Syn
Get your money back.
#31 - On 06/23/2009 at 2:36pm by thelonelylurker
Don't worry about it
when i just read that i didn't think ICE right away either.
Take it easy pal.... it happens...
:)
are you sure it wasn't hard water? cuz hard water isn't ice... then i would understand. but solid water? wow.
Everyone that says it happens is right, because it happened to me this morning!!
I was studying for a test i had tomorrow, and on the pre-test it said: what is one sex cell.
I was so busy studying, that i accidentally shouted, "WTF? HOW can we have a sex cell if we have red and white blood cells?"
Then, I got to thinking and remembered.
That made no sense whatsoever. Blood cells and sex cells have nothing to do with each other.
Please don't go into medical research when you graduate. We need smart people to do that.
LOL, we used to do that to the no0bs where I used to work, we ask them to go to the butchers counter and ask for a bucket of evaporated water or solid water. Most got it after the butcher would laugh, there was one girl though, she called him a dumb ass and then went to the boss to complain. He had to explain it to her! Rofl
So you had a brain fart. Whatever. Happens to everyone.
#47 - On 06/23/2009 at 3:11pm by _elly_beth_
Don't worry about it, that happens to everyone. Solid water being ice would be much more obvious to a young kid than to someone doing studies as advanced as you, since something as simple as ice wouldn't be the first thing you'd think of.
I really think you should have put two and two together... (2+2+4) however, the term "Solid water" isn't used a lot, and there is a reason for that... The reason being the term "solid water" has a name... It's call "ice" so whatever book that was in should think revising it... It is technically correct, but due to the language a little misleading... that said, you should have figured it out before your little relative.
lol you had a moment...happens to the best of us :P
Hahaha lol #18.
I'm an american and that was still funny.
How dumb can you be. God I hate "smart" people that have no common knowledge
LOL you probaly don't know what steam is YDI and FYL Im torn
maybe you should change your major then if you don't know solid water is ice... how this is an fml anyways? woop te doo, a 23 year old guy got outwitted by a 4th grader.... rme
make no mistake, the kid didn't get lucky. he put two and two together with his common sense. I've seen many people that graduated from ivy leauge schools that had zero common sense. you may have book smarts but you'll be calling him when you need to build that chair from walmart. that's what's wrong with this society. you'll probably be my boss someday.
op: you go to western, don't you?
You stop remembering the basics after a while. I once had to think hard about how to multiply. It was pretty bad
a science major is general sciences bud : physics, calc, chem, bio, etc... the real classes not arts
... Have you ever taken three studio art classes at once?
Everybody's brain goes into vaporlock every once in awhile.
Don't feel bad. Most of the people on this website probably wouldn't get it either. At-least you can be proud that you have some scientific education, unlike most people on the internet.
I love everybody that's insulting the OP. As it's been said before, when you're at a certain education/intellectual level, your mind tends to make things more complex than they really are. Of course, a child is going to be able to think of the answer first, since the child thinks in simpler times. Those of you that are insulting the OP probably have a simpler thought process than the OP. Congrats, you think like a child.
The book probably should have written it as "water in solid state". THAT is clearly ice. The term "solid water" made me think of non-Newtonian liquids.
haha everyone has those moments
1) you're a genius 2) there ARE monsters in the closet.
BAHAHAHAHA FAIL!!!!!!!!!! YDI xD!!!!!!!!
i feel there may have been a slight twist on the the truth here
it was probably not solid water but rather "heavy" water, which is just water with a deuterium isotope
if it was indeed solid water you are a tool
Nice pun #4!
Major FAIL for the FML person.
haha Dumbass. that was my first thought after reading this. I'm sorry, but it's true :)
It's not that bad, you know. Being a science major, you probably overthought it. Sometimes, simplicity is key.
There is such a thing as solid water, and it is not ice.
http://solidwaterusa.net/
i derno what's sadder, that you don't know what hard water is or that you believed him. epic fail.
anyways, what i learned from billy mayes yelling at me: hard water is that stuff that comes out of your shower/sink/hose and causes lime scale (hard water is packed with minerals)
It happens. =) I don't think it's that bad. A lot of math majors, once they get into more complex concepts, for example, start to forget how to do simple arithmetic (or so says one my math major friends). Sometimes we forget how *simple* things can be!
humorizer, obviously you didn't pay attention afterall because Krebs does not have two 'b's in it.
its just one of those things you know. children have different ways of thinking, whateva
@ #80:
That's... partially true I guess, I think I can integrate better than I can subtract. o.O; That's... kind of scary, in a way.
Want to re-think that whole 'science major' thing?
You see? Everything you need to know was taught in Pre-school.
Hey you know what else would be really funny? If the earth were round.
solid water=ice
hard water=dissolved rocks
if you have hard water buildup, it just means there are sediments in you water that show on surfaces when water evaporates. you can listen to Billy mayes, but make sure you know WTF your talking about.
hard water is different than solid water. ice is water in a solid state. hard water is when there are dissolved sediments in your water. hard water buildup is when the sediments 'buildup' on a surface
You're an idiot. Of course, Chemistry majors are morons. It's all about physics.
Actually I would put this under "health", as in your mental health is questionable
LOL. I wonder how you've made it through the four years of your major.
I completely understand that, lmao. Sometimes on tests, I will completely ace the tough questions no one else gets, but I'll completely screw up the duh questions. It's just a matter of switching off your brain. xD
Solid Water IS NOT Ice
Solid water is water under a lot of preassure, like the lower layers of Neptune
yea i feel you im always getting stuck on Bi hydro mono oxide
I'm sure something like this has happened to all of us.
ok not only am I blonde, I'm a 9th grader who's smarter than a college student.
Do you want a cookie? Whoopdie do Freshman. I'm a Junior who is going to graduate early, only have half day classes, and graduate with Honors.
sounds like something i would do...
hahahah.
[x
People need to find something better to do with their lives than come on here and be pricks to people they don't know. Brain farts happen to the best of us.
I did do that once only it was little bit different, I was drinking this really bad coffee and I said "This tastes like burnt water" and then I spent the next 20 minutes trying to imagine burt water...then I realized it turns to steam.
It's ok, the smarter you get the more you tend to overthink things.
Don't worry, happens to the best of us! but then again! If you induce a magnetic field to liquid water, it will turn into a solid! even thought it could be room temp!
LOL, when I first read "solid water" I had to think about it for a minute
This reminds me of football players who get full college scholarships, without even being able to read. Well I guess as long as you actually do understand the concept of ice being the solid form of water, then it's okay, we all have "brain freezes."
#119 - On 06/23/2009 at 7:23pm by jmgirl
Solid water... it's really quite simple
YDI for majoring in Chemistry
solid water... not that hard man... ydi
what the hell does YDI mean?
You deserved it.
#126 - On 06/23/2009 at 7:49pm by Paigeth
Eh, mental lapse. It happens.
you deserve it for being a tard.
hey, some kids are super smart nowadays, don't underestimate them
Why is everybody on her such asses? Brain fart, get over it.
Don't feel bad, u probably just overthought it, being so highly learned in science. I know I was thinking of some altered form of water that was highly saturated lol.
Littler kids simplify things. When you think about complex stuff for a while, you don't really notice the simple things. I think that's what happened here, not anything else, like you're dumb or w/e. I think you know what ice is... :]
"What's this water made of, ice?"
That's easy, you deserved it.
Why would they call it "solid water" anyways? That's a stupid term. Why not "frozen water" or better yet, "ice?"
Hey now, there's nothing wrong with looking for monsters. >:-[
Hmm... I looked up the definition of water and every definition I find online assumes "water" refers to the liquid state. I'm a 4th yr university student as well and I find it weird how many people have text books referring to ice as "solid water." I've never heard of the term myself and in my opinion the editors of those texts tried too hard to sound smart...
quote:
wa·ter (wôtr, wtr)
n. 1. A clear, colorless, odorless, and tasteless liquid, H2O, essential for most plant and animal life and the most widely used of all solvents. Freezing point 0°C (32°F); boiling point 100°C (212°F); specific gravity (4°C) 1.0000; weight per gallon (15°C) 8.338 pounds (3.782 kilograms).
If it makes you feel any better, I just asked some of my older friends and they thought it was either mud or jelly.
Mwahahahaha. How embarassing. You probably just over-thought it. FYL.
#141 - On 06/23/2009 at 8:44pm by Loverfli
Lol, this just goes to show you how much we overanalyze things as adults.
LOL! It's okay! That happens to a lot of us. When you learn more, you tend to overthink the simplest of problems. I was studying really hard in Geometry, because math is not my strong point, and I forgot my times tables, so I had to use my calculator. XD
buuuut, things like that happen all the time. the other day I was confused about what 5 plus 8 was. It took me like 10 minutes xD brain faaaaaaart.
dude you sound really burnt out
Solid water?? Wtf what IS that?? I have no idea???!!! Omg... Could it be ICE? duhhhhhhhh
wow smarty!!!!! a 2 year old knows that YDI YDI
i did that the other day!
#149 - On 06/23/2009 at 10:13pm by suckishfather
education in canada isn't that good, eh?
please tell me you have a few more years before getting a job and screwing up our lives...
ps the world is NOT flat
man... getting an education does that to you. you lose the imagination and simplicity and everything has to be so complicated because thats how things are being taught.
no worries... =)
the was a pet peeve of most of my highschool teachers...proper schooling kills curiosity...
Brain fart. it happens.
I'm studying to do my nursing major so i've been in well over 6 biology classes. one day in Nutrition my prof asks me "what does ATP stand for" and i blanked, boo!
I probably would have done the same thing LOL!
You were probably really fried... :3
Take time to reeeelaaaax.
Haha, well you are, 'uneek'.....actually, I didn't get it either until I saw ice. And I aced chem.
Why are all these fmls about people being fucking stupid
LOL- I think that might have taken me awhile to get too, if someone randomly asked me that. Sometimes the simple things get temporarily shoved out of the brain while craming a ton of both helpful or useless info we have to know order to pass a class.
#160 - On 06/24/2009 at 12:35am by jendmurray5
you would think in high school or college the term "ice" would be worded as such. "solid water" seems kind of like a term a younger child would use to refer to ice.i can see the mix up.water isnt really solid, only ice is.it should have been written a bit better.if anything, this is the books fault since quite a few of us would or have done the same thing.
Wow, cold+water =ice
dumbshit
You were simply thinking too hard.. Im not voting.
Hey, what's the gas form of water?
At least he didn't say, "Ice, dumbass."
Common mistake of thinking too hard about something so simple. Not too big of a deal.
#171 - On 06/24/2009 at 3:08am by U_idiot
usually smart people over analyze things and skip the simple awnser
wow, umm.. its not that hard to figure out
Can I get you to sign this petition to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide? It's a colorless, odorless chemical that has been known to be fatal when ingested or inhaled, but can still be found nearly anywhere in the world-- 70% of it, in fact! It has been used as a coolant for thousands of years, and is also found in many foods and drinks. WE MUST STOP THIS CRISIS NOW!
That just further proves that being in college doesn't mean ur smart, it just means u did ur homework and/or ur family is loaded. I know people at Brown who are as dumb as a dishcloth
I´ve heard about something even more neato, it´s liquid gas!!!!
Hey, it's only one mistake. That doesnt mean she(or he) is dumb
I agree little confusing but you should have been able to figure that out
Mwahahaha !!! XD
It happens sometimes. ^^ Brain just don't want to work.
Well I guess sometimes it takes someone from the outside to figure it out. Don't give up... Yet ;)
pfft i bet you go to U of T
I love it when people get "smarter" by pushing their education to its limits, and then actually get dumber in the process when it comes to common knowledge. However, I disagree that you're completely stupid when you have one brain lapse. That's a very close-minded thing to say....
Hahah Some people just get too smart that they forget many simple things. Simplicity can be so complex :D
smart people often lack common sense, it's not something to worry about =)
our physics teacher once told us about a dumb moment of einstein to cheer us all up.
einstein asked his carpenter to make two holes in the door for the convinience of the 2 cats that lived in his house. a small one for the smaller cat and a big one for the bigger!! ;)
cheer up.
it's ok, all our brains fart haha
you must be a biology major, those guys are retarded
And we wonder why Western scientists are being overtaken by their Asian counterparts.
you should be ashamed of yourself
SERIOUSLY, not gonna lie i would have done the same damn thing :) don't feel too too bad
i did it too...you were probably just over thinking it
On a true-false quiz, I answered "true" on the line that asked, "Name:________"
It happens.
HAHAHA....it's ok you just had a blonde moment ;) sounds like something I would say w/o thinking lol
Don't worry! I had the same reaction to "solid water" and i scored 34 on my science ACT.
It happens to all of us!
wow. wat kind of dumbäsš person r u?? YDI.
Says the person who can't even completely spell out the simplest words.
Even, brain farts like that happen to people all the time. Chances are, he is probably much more intelligent then you or me.
Woah dude. Sounds like you need some downtime. Relax and have a beer before you fizz out completely.
Actually I noticed that since the younger generation don't have as much info in their brains, they tend to think more clearly when it comes to even the littlest details. Us univ. students have to deal with at least a trillion pieces of info, so the brain gets all crammed up and confused. I've even seen pHD professors forget tiny things that I know!
#205 - On 06/29/2009 at 8:57pm by flogurl9
ehh, no big deal... it happens to the best of us :)
I fucking hate chemistry. It's so damn hard. Take anatomy it's much more interesting.
Well to be fair I was thinking of Heavy Water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heavy_water) when I read the first sentence, I'm not a chemistry student but it's easy to over think things when you're inundated with complex problems on a daily basis.
haha well you were over thinking it. same thing happened to me in bio (cells unit) when i was looking at the formula H2O and being so is this hydrochloric acid or what is this thing? overthinking it, thats all
Lol wow looks like you had a brain fart must of been stinkay in there!!!
well who uses the phrase solid water anyway?
Science major and you don't know what solid water is? YDI for being stupid.
