Today, I couldn't prove my son has had chickenpox, so his school gave us the option of getting a potentially dangerous shot he didn't need, pay for an expensive blood test to show that he previously had the virus, or sign a waiver stating I'm a religious nut refusing medical treatment. FML

I am pretty sure that they can't even legally do that. I mean you have to pay for something spendy or call yourself insane? You are doing it to protect others and to keep your own kid from getting worst

Ummm, if your son has had the chicken pox, the shot is not dangerous, unless he is allergic to other immunizations, which if he was the school would already know. Personal opinion: you wanna be difficult! JS

I would go with the religious nut thing, usually works

don't be surprised when they call CPS on your religious ass

Erm, I've received the chicken pox vaccine several times and it isn't "potentially dangerous." I'm also not going to debate vaccine side effects here, just stating a personal experience.

Same thing happened to me. Took daughter to the doctor to confirm she had chicken pox, but didn't take her younger brother when he caught it because I didn't want to take the chance of spreading it to others. We moved to California and they wanted either proof that he'd had chicken pox or the vaccination before he could start school. I opted to sign a waiver stating that I was opposed to this vaccination due to "personal or religious reasons" rather than waste time or money on unnecessary medical procedures.

So what if they don't believe you? Take him out of school anyway. Get a Doctor's note. Show them the prescription. Send them a picture of your kid totally covered in chickenpox. Or at least make THEM pay for the scan to check he had them. YDI for not thinking properly.
