Today, at my mother's open-casket funeral, my sister-in-law went to pay her respects. As she stood in front of the body, she coughed, muttering "Bitch" in the process. Either nobody else noticed or nobody cared, and she went on her way, noticeably not choked up at all. FML

Today, I attended the funeral of a close friend. Most of the other guests were openly grinning and joking around, and the guy in front of me kept muttering, "That's what she said!" during the eulogy. FML
Today, during my father's funeral, I heard my mother-in-law mutter, "No loss there. Lazy cunt." FML
Today, my parents and I attended the funeral of my husband's mother. It was open-casket, and my parents went to take a look. My mum muttered, "With a dress that tacky, no wonder she died", and my dad chuckled. A fight quickly erupted, and the police were called. FML
Today, I got a horrible case of the hiccups while at my friend's mother's funeral, resulting in me squeaking loudly every five seconds during the eulogy. My friend glared daggers at me until I left the room, then later accused me of being an insensitive bitch for "trying to ruin the funeral." FML
Today, we buried my mom. I walked past my sister's husband just in time to hear him mutter: "Hope the fire's nice and hot down there, you old hag." I told my sister. She wouldn't believe me and accused me of trying to start drama. FML
Today, I was at my mom's funeral. My sisters and I were sitting in the front row. The funeral director, whom we had met with twice before, was going around greeting everyone. When she got to us, she asked where our mom was. Seriously? FML
Today, my family attended the funeral of an old family friend's baby, who died in childbirth. Afterwards, my husband went around snickering and quietly telling dead baby jokes to the other attendees. FML
Today, my sister announced her pregnancy at my husband's funeral. FML
Today, I'm at my mother-in-law's funeral, who died of Covid-19. Months before catching the virus, she would claim that, "the entire Covid thang is bullshit" and "people are just behaving like f****ts over a simple flu." FML
Today, I visited with my cousin on her deathbed. When I asked what she was doing, they replied that she was sleeping. Next thing out my mouth without thinking was, "She can sleep when she's dead." FML

My mom and sister-in-law didn't get along very well, but she mourned along with the rest of my family at my mom's funeral. Even if they had differences, OP's sister-in-law should be respectful and supportive for her husband's sake, if nothing else.

Having known someone with a relative whose corpse deserved to be thrown into the street and trampled by incontinent, diarrhetic, rabid camels.... it may have been that the mother in law was really that horrible of a bitch to her daughter in law, and that the DIL finally felt free to express a major buildup of deserved rage. In that case, be glad she didn't laugh and scream "THANK GOD THAT EVIL COW IS DEAD!" Alternatively, she's just a bitch who is now gloating that only SHE is going to control her husband's life. Either way, it's an FML for you. Your mom was either a horrible MIL, or your SIL is a real piece of work. Ugh. Go have a lot of beers.

But even if it was the first situation, I feel she should have held in her rejoicing and let out her pent up anger when she was alone just in case someone was to overhear, like OP did. Just out of respect for everyone else.
