Today, I was outside searching for "treasures" with my son using small plastic shovels. All of a sudden he starts screaming. He dug up the bones of our old dog. I told him that we had sent him away to live on a farm, I even helped my son write letters to the farm owners. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was babysitting my little cousin when we decided to go outside and have a "treasure hunt" in the backyard. The first thing we found? The bones of her pet dog who had passed away four years ago. FML
Today, I told my daughter that we were going to the beach. Today, my daughter also tried to dig up our deceased dog, who we buried in our back yard last week, so he could come along. FML
Traumatic
Today, I sent my kids to play in the back garden and immediately heard them screaming. We buried our dog last week and last night some animal dug her up and spread the bones and rotting flesh around. The stench was horrendous, the kids are traumatized, and I vomited while reburying the bits. FML
Today, my new dog unburied my old dog and chewed on his bones. FML
Archeology
Today, I was digging the foundation for what will eventually be my garage. My kids wanted to help Daddy, which means they had a front row seat with their little spades when we unearthed the skeleton of some previous homeowner's dog. Now they won’t stop crying. FML
Today, I took my son for a walk to tell him about the passing of our family dog. As we were walking by the river, Ozzy (our deceased dog) was laying on the riverbank. My son thought he just ran away and we found him. Turns out my husband was too cheap to pay the 100$ vet disposal fees. FML
Today, while I was on a field trip with my son, my husband decided to get rid of our dog without asking anyone. Now I get to pick up the pieces of a broken heart, and he thinks he did nothing wrong. FML
Creepy backyard
Today, I found a pile of animal skeletons scattered in my backyard. It appears that last night, mother nature decided to rain so hard, that the graves of my childhood pets floated back up to the top, and covered half of my field. I now have to pick all of it up before my dog sees them. FML
Today, my dog died. My parents told me to bury it out back. In the process, I managed to dig up my cat. FML
Today, I realized burying my dog underneath our swing-set was a bad idea. My two sons are now scarred for life. FML

Perhaps you should have buried the dog further down... he must've been awfully close to the surface if your son was able to reach the bones with a plastic shovel.

And this is why we shouldn't lie to our kids about dumb stuff. They can handle the truth.

This story is fake. As many of you have pointed out--but yet, for some reason, choose to ignore--the facts just don't pan out. Who buries a dog in a shallow enough grave in the back yard so that it could be dug out with a plastic toy shovel? A dog that had died within the memorable lifetime of a young child would not yet have fully decomposed into just bones. Why would a small child find some bones in the backyard and automatically think, "Hey, that's my dog?" Does he have some advanced knowledge of canine anatomy, such that he can identify a dog by a few bones? (I doubt he unearthed the entire corpse with his plastic shovel.) So, yeah... fake fake fake. That being said, plenty of parents tell this lie, and it's not even remotely close to bad parenting. In my experience, only bad parents (or people who aren't parents at all) accuse others of being bad parents. Raising a child is not like fixing a car; there's no manual, and no single way to handle a situation "correctly." Would this have been an opportunity to explain death to the child? Sure. Does not taking that opportunity make her a bad parent? Not even close. Is the child going to "hate her forever because she lied?" Give me a break... that's the stupid thing I've ever heard. But, again ... that's besides the point. Fake story.

..... You are a terrible parent.

That's only a "You deserved that one," because you didn't remember where you burried the dog, let alone remembered that the dog was in the backyard, but other than that, it's okay, because depending on the kid's age when the dog died, it was for the best.
