Today, I turned 23. I had asked my mom for some things to decorate my new place. As I opened the box to reveal my gift, a mirror was inside. I liked the mirror. I did not like the note attached that said "Look inside the mirror to see who is now 100% financially responsible for themselves." FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I received the 'special' present my mother had sent me for my 21st birthday. I opened the box and saw that my mother had picked out, accessorized and shipped to me, in college, a doll. FML
Life is a roller coaster
Today, it's my birthday and my mom took me and some friends to an amusement park. Looking for a tampon, I found a phone in my mom's purse that I didn't recognize. Turns out my mom is cheating on my dad. Happy birthday to me, I guess. FML
Today, my mom gave me my Christmas gift. It was a letter containing $200 and a note saying, "Here's the down payment for your apartment, please just move out already." I turned 18 last week. Thanks mom. FML
Today, it's my birthday. After a day out partying, I came home to find all my stuff smashed in the yard, even my 42" plasma TV. After asking my girlfriend what her problem was, she said a "slut" left a message on the machine stating how fun last night was. It turned out to be my mom. FML
Today, it was my mom's birthday. I decided to get her a Willow Tree statue of a woman fairy holding a heart. After dinner, I presented my gift. My mother asked me how much it was. I replied, $30. She threw me a dirty look, shoved the present in my direction, and told me to return it. FML
Today, is my 21st birthday. I get home after my night out and walk into the garage to see a 2002 Red Corvette convertible. I run up to the car thinking its a gift and there's a note: "Dani this is not your birthday present. Quit drooling on my car. -Dad" Thanks Dad. FML
Today, I went to Target. I was on my way to the bathroom when I find a huge mirror. No one was around so I started to see how my butt looked in my jeans, checked up my nose and fixed my bra. An older woman then walks out of a door next to the mirror and explains that it's a two-way mirror. FML
Today, I walk out of my apartment to find that my car is decorated with explicit drawings and "Happy 21st birthday" stuff written all over it. To top it off, my vehicle is completely wrapped in plastic wrap. I'm 22 and my birthday is in December. FML
Priorities
Today, my mother flipped out that I spent $20 on a gift for myself for my birthday. Instead of getting a gift for me, she spent $300 on a new vacuum cleaner, and claims that we didn't have enough left in our budget to spend on me. FML
Losing my mind
Today, my mom and I were talking about a wedding decoration that we are going to use at my wedding. I insisted that I gave the decorations to her and I didn’t bother looking in my house. She came over for the night and cleaned while I was at work. She found the decorations that I'd insisted that I'd given to her. FML

I don't mean to be rude, but if you're 23, you should be financially responsible for yourself. YDI.

There is a different way to look at this. it is a challenge, a truth and a powerful life lesson all rolled into one. 23 is not too young to be responsible for one's financial wellness. At 23 my mother had 3 children already. Today at 47 I look back in awe of what my parents accomplished raising us. Do take a good long look in that mirror, take a deep breath and then, step up - this is not a dress rehearsal and you will get out of this life what you put into it. Years from now this mirror will be among your most treasured of gifts if you're wise enough to seize the opportunity and accept the challenge. Leave petty "waaah I didn't get what I wanted" behind you now. It's time!!

In this day it is hard to be financially responsible for yourself at 18. I was in college. I paid for most of my tuition, but my parents helped me out as well. I didn't become fully independent until I was 21, found a full-time job, and moved to another state. I do think that at age 18 you should at least be well on your way to becoming financially independent by going to school, or at the very least, paying your parents rent if you choose to live at home. However, the OP's mom was unreasonable for the fact that it was supposed to be a birthday gift. I think the OP is showing plenty of responsibility by asking for a gift for his home rather than something like a video game.

Wow. Well, Happy Birthday. Tell your Mom to look into a mirror on her next birthday, to see the bitch who is 100% responsible to provide HER own birthday present.

All you people who are saying you should be financially responsible for yourself are a bunch of idiots. I turned 18 a few months into my senior year of high school. I guess I should have quit going to school, moved out, and got a full time job the day I turned 18. Hell, I am still living at home and I see no problem with it. I go to college and I commute to save money. There is no possible way I could earn enough money (if I could even find a job where I live in this economy) to pay for school and live on my own. So OP, that really sucks. I know some members of my extended family STILL have to borrow money off their parents sometimes...

Stop crying, at 23 AND moving out your parents should not be supporting you or you are a failure.
