Today, I turned 23. I had asked my mom for some things to decorate my new place. As I opened the box to reveal my gift, a mirror was inside. I liked the mirror. I did not like the note attached that said "Look inside the mirror to see who is now 100% financially responsible for themselves." FML
Collection
Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I received the 'special' present my mother had sent me for my 21st birthday. I opened the box and saw that my mother had picked out, accessorized and shipped to me, in college, a doll. FML
Life is a roller coaster
Today, it's my birthday and my mom took me and some friends to an amusement park. Looking for a tampon, I found a phone in my mom's purse that I didn't recognize. Turns out my mom is cheating on my dad. Happy birthday to me, I guess. FML
Today, my mom gave me my Christmas gift. It was a letter containing $200 and a note saying, "Here's the down payment for your apartment, please just move out already." I turned 18 last week. Thanks mom. FML
Today, it's my birthday. After a day out partying, I came home to find all my stuff smashed in the yard, even my 42" plasma TV. After asking my girlfriend what her problem was, she said a "slut" left a message on the machine stating how fun last night was. It turned out to be my mom. FML
Today, it was my mom's birthday. I decided to get her a Willow Tree statue of a woman fairy holding a heart. After dinner, I presented my gift. My mother asked me how much it was. I replied, $30. She threw me a dirty look, shoved the present in my direction, and told me to return it. FML
Today, is my 21st birthday. I get home after my night out and walk into the garage to see a 2002 Red Corvette convertible. I run up to the car thinking its a gift and there's a note: "Dani this is not your birthday present. Quit drooling on my car. -Dad" Thanks Dad. FML
Today, I went to Target. I was on my way to the bathroom when I find a huge mirror. No one was around so I started to see how my butt looked in my jeans, checked up my nose and fixed my bra. An older woman then walks out of a door next to the mirror and explains that it's a two-way mirror. FML
Today, I walk out of my apartment to find that my car is decorated with explicit drawings and "Happy 21st birthday" stuff written all over it. To top it off, my vehicle is completely wrapped in plastic wrap. I'm 22 and my birthday is in December. FML
Priorities
Today, my mother flipped out that I spent $20 on a gift for myself for my birthday. Instead of getting a gift for me, she spent $300 on a new vacuum cleaner, and claims that we didn't have enough left in our budget to spend on me. FML
Losing my mind
Today, my mom and I were talking about a wedding decoration that we are going to use at my wedding. I insisted that I gave the decorations to her and I didn’t bother looking in my house. She came over for the night and cleaned while I was at work. She found the decorations that I'd insisted that I'd given to her. FML

I don't mean to be rude, but if you're 23, you should be financially responsible for yourself. YDI.

Give it back to her when she needs a loan.

If its your birthday, than that is a lousy birthday present. Everyone deserves those, no matter the age.

I feel for you. That's something my mum would probably do. At least you got a mirror! :)

She's right, but she's should know that birthdays don't count. My parents are 100% responcible for themselves an me an they still get presents. She could have gotten you a lamp or a picture or something.

Birthdays don't count. If you're a mooch though, you know... I can see some parents doing this to their kid.

You people who are talking about "financially responsible at 18" are out of your ******* minds. All of you. Secondly, this is definitely a FYL, because it appears you asked for some useful items for your BIRTHDAY, and your mother wigged out with a screed on being financially responsible for yourself? That's sad. From one 23 year old to another, I feel your pain.

How is being financially responsible at 18 not reasonable? I know plenty of people who got kicked out of their houses and into the real world at 18. OP needs to man up and take responsibility for his own livelihood.

I think mooching off of the parents' food, electricity, etc. for 5 years more than most kids are able to was a pretty nice gift.

I'm 19 and not financially responsible yet, but everything I make goes into savings. That way when I am 23 I can support myself. Being that old and relying on your parents is just embarrassing.

I agree. Plenty of people who go to college still rely on their parents for tuition or rent help. I'm in medical school at 24 and still dependent on my parents (and a ridiculous amount of financial aid debt) because you can't work while in medical school. Parents are supposed to save money to help their children through college. If you can't do that, don't have kids. And besides, this was supposed to be a birthday gift. She shouldn't have been such a bitch about it. If she didn't want to get him all the furniture he asked for, fine, but at least get him a gift and sit down with him later and tell him why he didn't get everything he wanted. That's not an appropriate setting for his mom to have done that. On her next birthday, tell her you didn't get her anything because she's financially responsible for herself. Gifts are supposed to be a nice gesture of appreciation for you on your birthday. Not an opportunity to teach someone a lesson.
