Today, it was my mom's birthday. I decided to get her a Willow Tree statue of a woman fairy holding a heart. After dinner, I presented my gift. My mother asked me how much it was. I replied, $30. She threw me a dirty look, shoved the present in my direction, and told me to return it. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
It's the thought that counts
Today, for my mom's 50th birthday, all she wanted was a certain gold bracelet. It was too much money for me to buy, so I bought the same one in silver. Right before I gave it to her, my older sister gave her the gold bracelet, which made her cry. When I gave her my present, she just said, "Oh." FML
Thanks for the memories
Today, my mom lit a candle in our living room, telling the family how much she loved it. She then went on the tell us that my dad got it for her and it must have been some cheap candle. I bought the candle as a gift for her on her birthday. FML
Today, my mom was feeling down, so I decided to buy her a gift. Knowing she likes lighthouses, I bought her a tiny one that plugs in and lights up. I brought it home, plugged it in, and when she saw me with it, she said, "Wipe that smirk off your face and get that junk out of here." FML
Priorities
Today, my mother flipped out that I spent $20 on a gift for myself for my birthday. Instead of getting a gift for me, she spent $300 on a new vacuum cleaner, and claims that we didn't have enough left in our budget to spend on me. FML
Today, was my mom's birthday. I recently got my first job, thanks to her, and could finally afford to buy her something nice. I spent my first paycheck ever on buying her a very nice bracelet. She said it was nice, then asked if I would mind if she exchanged it for one she actually liked. FML
Old dog, new tricks
Today, for my mom's birthday, I couldn't figure out what to get her, so I just took some of her jewelry, wrapped it up, and re-gifted it. She recognized it instantly. FML
Today, I received the 'special' present my mother had sent me for my 21st birthday. I opened the box and saw that my mother had picked out, accessorized and shipped to me, in college, a doll. FML
Today, I bought my mother an expensive TV she had been looking at. After I bought it, she continued browsing for more stuff. I told her I couldn't afford the extra items. She got mad and called me "selfish". FML
Today, I was feeling guilty about an argument I had with my mother right before she left to go shopping. When she got back, I ran to give her a hug and tell her I loved her. Unfortunately, in the process, I knocked over and broke her new $200 vase. FML
Today, I thought my mom and I could put aside our differences and open our Christmas presents. When she opened mine, she turned to my dad and said she didn't want the present, so I could give it to someone else. 'Tis the season. FML

You should never ask how much a present costs; and if you are asked you should never say. It's just impolite. I feel sorry that your mother is so rude.

Maybe OP's mom thought the gift was too expensive. I know my mom would yell at me and make me return something I got her if it was expensive because to her that's wasting money. Especially if it's a $30 statue, in my family we just don't spend money on those kind of things. But then again we're not a normal family.

#1 - Me either, really. Did you not spend enough money or something, OP? o_0

#1,3: I think she thought the statue was ugly and she wanted to make sure there wasn't another reason for getting it--like it being really expensive--before telling her to return it. Alternatively, she thought it was too cheap like #3 suggested.

Exactly what I was going to say. You're not supposed to say how much a present costs. That's why you rip off the price tag. Asking how much a present costs is like asking a random woman her weight: it's rude and isn't usually tolerable in a civilized community. OP, your mom shouldn't have asked, but you certainly shouldn't have told her.

Agreed very impolite and ungrateful. Next time don't get her anything and when she asks why remind her

I would never buy her sorry ass another present.

She might be going through a rough time. You should have talked to her about it more.

she told him to return a FREE thoughtful gift, how does that mean she is going through a rough time?

That is terrible. After that woman spent years teaching you to have good manners and accept stupid gifts like clothes on your birthday, she rejects it and tells you to return it. She could have done it like a human being and said something like, "You didn't have to do this..." That pisses me off.

It's not clear if the mom thought it cost too much or too little. With my family background and when I first read this, it felt it she thought the statue was a waste of money. $30 these days can be spent on so many more useful things over a statue, especially given the economy. She might've felt it was an insult to all those others (friends, family, relatives) who are just struggling to get by and here we are wasting money on statues. To me it felt like the mom would rather teach her kid a lesson in finance over accepting a $30 gift that she doesn't really care for.
