Today, I turned 23. I had asked my mom for some things to decorate my new place. As I opened the box to reveal my gift, a mirror was inside. I liked the mirror. I did not like the note attached that said "Look inside the mirror to see who is now 100% financially responsible for themselves." FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I received the 'special' present my mother had sent me for my 21st birthday. I opened the box and saw that my mother had picked out, accessorized and shipped to me, in college, a doll. FML
Life is a roller coaster
Today, it's my birthday and my mom took me and some friends to an amusement park. Looking for a tampon, I found a phone in my mom's purse that I didn't recognize. Turns out my mom is cheating on my dad. Happy birthday to me, I guess. FML
Today, my mom gave me my Christmas gift. It was a letter containing $200 and a note saying, "Here's the down payment for your apartment, please just move out already." I turned 18 last week. Thanks mom. FML
Today, it's my birthday. After a day out partying, I came home to find all my stuff smashed in the yard, even my 42" plasma TV. After asking my girlfriend what her problem was, she said a "slut" left a message on the machine stating how fun last night was. It turned out to be my mom. FML
Today, it was my mom's birthday. I decided to get her a Willow Tree statue of a woman fairy holding a heart. After dinner, I presented my gift. My mother asked me how much it was. I replied, $30. She threw me a dirty look, shoved the present in my direction, and told me to return it. FML
Today, is my 21st birthday. I get home after my night out and walk into the garage to see a 2002 Red Corvette convertible. I run up to the car thinking its a gift and there's a note: "Dani this is not your birthday present. Quit drooling on my car. -Dad" Thanks Dad. FML
Today, I went to Target. I was on my way to the bathroom when I find a huge mirror. No one was around so I started to see how my butt looked in my jeans, checked up my nose and fixed my bra. An older woman then walks out of a door next to the mirror and explains that it's a two-way mirror. FML
Today, I walk out of my apartment to find that my car is decorated with explicit drawings and "Happy 21st birthday" stuff written all over it. To top it off, my vehicle is completely wrapped in plastic wrap. I'm 22 and my birthday is in December. FML
Priorities
Today, my mother flipped out that I spent $20 on a gift for myself for my birthday. Instead of getting a gift for me, she spent $300 on a new vacuum cleaner, and claims that we didn't have enough left in our budget to spend on me. FML
Losing my mind
Today, my mom and I were talking about a wedding decoration that we are going to use at my wedding. I insisted that I gave the decorations to her and I didn’t bother looking in my house. She came over for the night and cleaned while I was at work. She found the decorations that I'd insisted that I'd given to her. FML

I don't mean to be rude, but if you're 23, you should be financially responsible for yourself. YDI.

Give it back to her when she needs a loan.

You're 23 and you're complaining? That's the cutoff for medical insurance isn't it? So what'd you expect? I hope you're at least appreciative of the 5 years of help she's given you since you turned of age.. But really, she did give you a birthday present, and you must have a tendency to ask for a lot or else she wouldn't have written a note like that. YDI.

What is so wrong with being responsible? Maybe your mother is proud of you making this step in your life and pointing it out to you.

"FML, I've expected to act my age!" Seriously? You weren't expecting this?

I'm turning 21 soon and I don't expect anything that I didn't buy myself. It's not that my parents don't love me; I just couldn't respect myself if I asked for anything. Most likely, I'll return the stuff and give the money back to my parents, since they are also working minimum wage just like me because of the economy.

Reality's a bitch, ain't it? Frankly, your mom is totally right. At that age, you shouldn't be expecting any handouts from anyone. Now granted, she could have been a bit more tactful, but on the other hand you kinda gotta give her props for creativity.

It was your birthday though! Your mom's mean.

Jeepers, there's other ways of communicating that, and certainly other times. A birthday isn't the day to say "buy your own shit".

I don't get how someone can take the note as a bad thing. How can someone not look at themselves and feel a bit pride at being able to finacially take care of themselves?
