Today, I dyed my hair purple. I came out of the salon and a little girl walked past and said, "Wow, you look like a mermaid!", to which her mother quickly said, "No she doesn't, she looks like her parents don't love her." FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I went to the hair salon. When I got home, my three-year-old daughter told me I looked like Dora the Explorer. FML
Today, I babysat for two little girls, who wanted to play 'mermaids'. I smiled, and said that I would love to play with them. The older girl laughed, saying "You can't be a mermaid. Mermaids are pretty." FML
Today, my mom was feeling down because of her gray hairs. In an attempt to cheer her up, I suggested that she dye them. Her hair turned orange. FML
Kids these days…
Today, while changing my clothes, my 3 year-old daughter informed me that I looked like a zebra. Noticing my shocked face, she tried comforting me by telling me I was a pretty zebra because I was a purple zebra. She was talking about my stretch marks. FML
Today, I went to a salon. As soon as I walked in, someone ran to me and inspected my hair and said, "We can fix this." I was there to get my daughter's hair done. FML
Today, I got my long hair cut in a short pixie cut. When my five year old daughter saw me she laughed and proclaimed 'You look just like a man!'. That afternoon I got a concerned call from the school. My daughter has told everyone 'mummy has gone away, I now have two daddies!' FML
Today, at the Mommy and Me dance class that I take my four year old daughter to, the instructor had us do a stretch, telling us to pretend we're mermaids. My daughter said to me, "But you're not a mermaid, you're a whale!" FML
Today, I was walking down the sidewalk and heard a little girl ask her dad why I had blue hair. He said, "Sometimes drugs will make people do stupid things." FML
Thanks, guys
Today, I’ve been dying my hair an auburn color for years. It looks so natural and get complimented often. Before I can even say thank you, my daughter or partner blurts out, “It's not real” or “It’s fake”. Everyone laughs and it’s a little less awkward, I guess… FML
Today, I went to get my hair highlighted at the salon. The salonist mixed up my blonde hair dye with some other girl's hot pink and violet dye. Now I look like a cheap hooker. FML

That's ridiculous. If anything, that little girl's mother doesn't love HER enough to let her express herself. She's teaching her daughter to judge others based on what they look like. Parenting fail.

To be fair I don't think my mom was 100% trying to insult you. I think she was just trying to keep her daughter dying her hair

What you're basically implying is that if the mum is trying to stop her child from dying her hair by saying ops parents mustn't love her.... The child's mum won't love her if she does the same?

So being a total shit to someone is excusable as long as you are using it to control your children?

That is so stupid. I plan on cutting my hair short and dying it purple soon. And my mom is paying for it. People can be ignorant assholes. Ignore the mom and listen to the kid. Over the years I've learned that little kids can be smarter than their parents. I bet you are rocking your new look.

Lucky. It was a huge fight when I came home with just some blue highlights one day before I moved out. I wish my parents were open minded like yours.

Situations like this infuriate me, as someone who dyes their hair unnatural colors on a regular basis. I most definitely agree with #1, the mother is making a horrible parenting decision in teaching her child to degrade people for expressing themselves in their own ways. I feel sorry for OP, but I honestly feel even worse for the child..

I absolutely agree with you. It's sad that the mother is teaching her child that she can't be unique.

ah yes, motherly manipulation so her daughter grows up with negative connotation surrounding dying her hair

Ignore the mom and if it been me I have said that's cause I am a mermaid I hate people who try to stifle kids the world is already grim enough without some ass trying to squash imagination too

Girl or guy, I just wanted to say that it doesn't matter what other people think. I died my hair purple for a tribute to my late sister who died of epilepsy and this is the foundations awareness colour. So many reasons people so something, but then I hear people laugh at my hair colour and I realize they are small minded and don't want to think of the why so much as the present look. Take it with a grain of salt, and remember it's what YOU want. Not what everyone else does!!

I know right. I remember a few years ago a friend of mine had to remove so much pink from her hair for a job interview. At the time, what was going through my mind was "why should anyone care, it's not like hair colour directly relates to intelligence".

I can't believe the nerve of some people. I also don't see how one dying their hair a non-natural color constitutes their parents not loving them.

If you are willing to do something outside the "norm", you must be willing to hear any comments regarding the choice-good and bad. My way of changing people's minds about me when my eyebrow was pierced was to be the same person I am now-one who opens doors, helps, and shows kindness. If you cannot handle what people say in the negative, you'll have to find another way to express yourself that is more "normal".

It's really not the OP's responsibility to teach people tact and basic human empathy though. It's their responsibility to be tactful.
