Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I gave birth to our first child at home. What was supposed to be a beautiful moment of us peacefully greeting our newborn, ended up with the cops knocking on our door. Apparently me giving birth sounds like a domestic dispute. FML
Today, my wife opted for a home birth with a nurse and her mother. Her mother is such a baby-feral, men-are-bastards, hippie feminist dragon that not only did she yell at me when I tried to be in the room, she has now pushed me out of the house. I ended up sat in my car with only one shoe and no phone. FML
Today, the family upstairs decided to play basketball. Indoors. At 3am. FML
Today, I was trying to get a good night's sleep before the huge exam tomorrow, which I'm extremely anxious about. The SAME night my neighbor below me is having a home birth. It lasted NINE HOURS. FML
Today, I found out that there's a very loud and frisky couple living above my bedroom, and a family with a crying baby living above my living room. At this rate, I'll end up sleeping in the bathtub in my own home. FML
Today, I gave birth to a baby girl. Where was my husband after the agony finally ended? Standing just outside the room, flirting with a nurse. FML
Today, I met my new upstairs neighbors. They have a four-month-old child and appear to be firm believers in the "let them cry it out" philosophy. The baby's room is right above mine. A few days of trying to sleep through this shit and I'll look like a Walking Dead extra. FML
Today, I gave birth, but my husband was late and got here just in time to cut the cord. He was hung over after celebrating his impending fatherhood all night. He missed the cord twice, cut it, then fell over, and wound up in the bed next to mine, with a hydrating IV and a bashed head where he hit it on the baby's cot. FML
Today, my sister came to stay with me in my apartment for the last few weeks of her difficult pregnancy. However she didn't tell me she was bringing her two dogs, her jackass of a husband, my bratty nephew, and an inflatable kiddie pool so she could have a natural water birth in my living room. FML
Today, I met my new upstairs neighbors and their 4 kids all under the age of 6. I met them due to all the thudding coming from upstairs. FML

At HOME birth: Whatever floats your boat. if that's what you'd like, who am I to judge. At APARTMENT birth where you likely have 4 families/people surrounding you merely separated by paper thin walls: Wtf -_- I know I'd be a bit pissed too.

Here's a thought for all the uneducated people out there that think a home birth is 'risky' and that only a Doctor would know if something was wrong - A Doctor is educated in OVERALL health, he/she treats patients (note: patient = sick or injured person, birth is not an illness or an injury) for a hugely wide variety of ailments, he/she delivers babies occasionally in between checking your tonsils and taking your blood pressure. By comparison, a midwife is well educated in pre-natal care and childbirth, it is his/her SPECIALITY. For years the midwife has done nothing but deliver babies and care for newborns and their mothers - a job they have been SPECIFICALLY trained for. Who do you think has more experience and knowledge about childbirth? When you have an eyesight problem do you go to your family physician, or to an optometrist? When you have toothache do you go to your family physician or a dentist? When your back is out do you go to your family physician or a chiropractor? See the trend here? Why would you NOT entrust the birth of your child to a child-birthing expert? As a mother who has experienced hospital birth with a Doctor, AND hospital birth with a midwife, AND home birth with a midwife, I speak with authority when I say that a home birth is indeed more calm and relaxed, an all round more pleasant experience.

While you make some really good points, mostly about the midwife part of your rant. You're forgetting that most doctors that deliver babies are called OBSTETRICIANS! Meaning they are SPECIALIZED to deliver babies. Home births may be a wonderful thing, however, things can go wrong in a matter of seconds. Things that only obstetricians are generally trained to handle. Obstetricians can go in and surgically remove the baby within minutes to save the mom and the baby's life, where as that would be difficult to do at home and by a midwife. I live in a small community where, yes, babies are delivered by family MD's, if it is a complication free pregnancy. I may not be a mother, but I know I would definitely prefer to have an obstetrician deliver my baby in a hospital where if things go wrong my baby and myself I know we have a better chance to be saved!

I think you may be a little confused. Most people having a baby in the hospital have a obstetrician, which is a doctor that specializes in delivering babies, so they probably have as much experience as a midwife. No one has the family doctor deliver a baby, as far as I know.

I was delivered by my family doctor.. That is definitely not the norm though.

Also good comments, thank you for your reasonable responses instead of the ridiculous rantings of some uneducated people on this topic. I guess it depends on where you are from. I have given birth in two different countries, and in both of them it was not at all unusual (in fact the norm) for your family physician to deliver the baby. I completely understand a first-time mother being anxious and wanting a hospital birth, because you are dealing with the unknown. I did that myself with my first two - I opted for a midwife assisted birth in the hospital. But once I knew what to expect, and knew what my body was capable of, I had the confidence to do home-birthing. Of course, one wouldn't go into such a decision in blind ignorance (hopefully). It is the parents responsibility to be educated, weigh the pros and cons, and have proper pre-natal care - which in most cases will catch any possible complications ahead of time. Midwives are intelligent and experienced people - if they see anything that indicates a possible problem, they will recommend that you go to a hospital. And, I think that some people are forgetting that hospitals and Doctors are not fool-proof. Tragedies during birthing or shortly after happen in hospitals too - more often than many people realise.

And why does everyone assume that the birth is going to be noisy? Many births, especially home births, are extremely quiet and calm.

It was obviously noisy because OP could hear it from his level.

Well I wonder how that went!

I birthed both my babes at home. I was loud, but the neighbors said they never heard a thing. You might think this sucks for you but it'll be the most important day in her life, and the life of her baby!
