(+2)that's what you get for trying to be smart
(+1)agreed. and I say FYL not because u feel bad for you but because you're a smartass
(+1)that's what you get for being ignorant, and stupid! congrats dumba$$
(0)Agreed! YDI for being a bitch.
(0)ydi
(0)Actually, it's what she gets for being arrogant. Sure, she was ignorant of the language the girl could speak, but how often do we check with strangers about their linguistic abilities (in regular circumstances)? No, she was flat-out arrogant for assuming that the target of her cruelty didn't speak the same languages.
(-1)such a shitty language
(0)I would do the same thing!!!
(0)At least you know it's rude to point haha.
(+6)that is exactly what you get for talking about people like that. what an arrogant prick. do you and your family have nothing better talk about? i'm pretty sure, i've never met you, that if you were a puddle, my feet wouldn't even get wet because you are such a shallow douche bag. what a shamefully pathetic life you are living. i hope karma bit you in the ass hard for that one, asshole.
#3 - On 03/15/2009 at 4:57am by mogan
(0)indeed!!!
(+2)exactly. him and his whole family are all aholes
(+2)Took the words right out of my mouth!!! OP, You got pwnd by Karma BIOTCH! Haha YDI fucktard!
(+1)@3 "If you were water on the ground from precipitation, you'd be so shallow, you wouldn't even exist!" I see you're a fatass. Get over your years of judgement and drown in a puddle, cunthat.
(+2)I did that before when someone thought they were being clever talking mess about me in Spanish. It's a good way to knock someone down a peg.
(+2)An ugly Swede?
Impossible.
(+1)Agreed.
(+1)this has absolutely nothing to do with the fml (which i think was clearly your fault) but i have a question: is å also a swedish letter? i live in denmark (dont know danish though) and i thought in swedish it was like this: ä
(+1)nvm, was said later on in the comments...
(0)å and ä are both swedish letters.
(0)fyi: danish and norwegian alphabets are abc...xyzæøå, swedish and finnish are abc...xyzäöå, æ is effectively the same as ä, ø is the same as ö...
(+1)I think you got what you deserved. Now you know not to talk smack on people, it shouldn't matter what language it's in.
(+1)yeah i agree you deserved it but how can people be so mean to you about it?!
seriously people calm yourselves.
it's not like you have no said anything bad about someone else
dont be such hypocrits
please it just causes drama
i agree it was really mean but i wont hate because it has happened to me too
but in a different situation
(0)So 3*, lemme get this straight... You think it's alright for someone to insult you in another language that you happen to know? And that they shouldn't be seen as a rude person?
(0)EditL Gah I ment #8. I would have edited it, but my computers loves to play freeze up and piss someone off whenever I wanna read FMLs.
(0)#8 - ha ur funny but atleast when we make fun of someone it's in thier native tounge and they can defend themselves! it sooo rude and ignorant to talk BS about someone when they can't understand u and deffend themselves... so on that lovely note f*ck u and have a nice day;)
(0)their*
(0)Just say in Swedish, "I'll see you there! Have a good fuck-offing day, Bitch"
All done.
(0)Heh, bet that felt weird...
WTF dude/dudet?!

WTF dude/dudette?!
#12 - On 03/15/2009 at 5:20am by ljuwaidah
(0)ha ha ha betcha didn't expect that :p
(0)you fricken DESERVED that. thats soooo fricken rude
if you are going to talk shit about it talk shit in the language of the country you're in.
at least that way if people wish to stoop down to your level they can do so
#14 - On 03/15/2009 at 5:21am by monkeebabes
(0)#6: There are 3 letter in the danish and the swedish alphabet that isn´t in the english. There are å,æ and ø. In Sweden they use ä,ö and å, where å is the same and æ is the same as ä and ø is the same as ö. Its a bit confusing :-).
Idiot Op btw.....
(0)Ha! 'No one ever understands here." See why it's dumb to jump to such conclusions?
You thouroughly deserved that, if not more. A shame no one threw a chair at you.
(0)agreed!!!
(0)you're a dick
(0)Lol...we're Dutch and my sister told me not to walk infront of a man's camera in Dutch..It was a Dutch woman. I really hope something like that doesn't happen to me! :S
(0)Jag ska kraks på din kuk.
(0)you deserved that. If you don't have the balls to say something to someone's face, you shouldn't say it at all. And to all the people who want to call me a hypocrite...YES, everything I say about someone I am more than willing to express it where they can clearly hear me and respond.
(0)hahaha people have talked about me in spanish and russian because they do not expect me to understand, but i understand both, and it sucks. you totally deserved that one lol.
(0)I really don't like people like you.
(0)funny. i'm pretty sure that means "Fuck you"
not "go to hell"
(0)You're wrong. "Dra åt helvete" means "Go To Hell."
We also use the words "Fuck you". And the direct translation to that is "Knulla dig"

(0)Why the hell would it matter to you what the girl looks like?
You were too much of a coward to say it to her face.
Or in English for that matter.
Haven't you heard the saying "Talk shit, get hit" ?
I bet you aren't a looker, either.
YDI.
(0)#25 and others who posted comments in similar lines:
People! FML's are meant to be funny. They are meant to be enjoyed. Laugh at them!. Don't judge/preach based on those few sentences.
Everyone does mistakes.
Many talk dirty about others. If you guys never did, you had a different upbringing.
(0)wow. that's a pretty rude, pretentious practice of your family's.
(0)I think you guys are being ridiculous saying that he's a prick and that he completely deserved it and that people like that are awful people.
Face it, everyone says mean things about other people behind their backs, unless you would like to go with #20's "YES, everything I say about someone I am more than willing to express it where they can clearly hear me and respond." (No, I'm not buying that.)
Because the OP happened to do it in their own language to family there rather than in the language of their country later on, you guys think that makes him an awful person. It makes no difference.
It was unlucky that she understood, but that doesn't make the OP deserve it or any worse than anyone who talks about people behind their backs.
(0)Skyll dig själv.

(0)Come on dude you know better than that. I speak another language than the normal one but I know better than to talk about people plainly in front of them.
(+1)"We're Swedish and love talking about people in our language because no one ever understands here."
Then you deserved this. I hope you avoid being so rude in future.
(0)I always do this... there's nothing wrong with having your own opinions.
And it's nicer to do it in a language no one else understands.
(0)You totally deserved it.
(0)It's one thing to vent about someone when you need to, but not everyone talks shit about people behind their backs like people are implying.
If you have something to say, don't be a coward and just say it so they can understand it... Or maybe you should stop being so shallow and don't judge people based on what they look like.
(0)Hmm, my family is Japanese, and we like talking TO each other in Japanese, because it keeps conversations more private. But we don't talk ABOUT people... Especially if they're right THERE. No matter what, because you never know if for some reason they understand. 8-) It reminds me of when I was at some theme park, and some lady in line behind me was getting way to close to me, so I said something to my cousin about it in Japanese, and the lady ended up being Japanese.
(0)hahaha, så går det, rätt åt dig!
You totally deserve that. :)

(0)it is kind a mean, but not a tragedy...
pretty embarassing, happened to me a couple of times too...
(0)That's precisely WHY I hate when people speak anything other than English in my country. If you don't have the balls to say it in front of me, in English, then you shouldn't be saying it at all. I think you completely deserved the reaction you got. I personally would have treated you much worse.
(0)lol @ #5
but brush it off man, she was ugly anyway, you did her a favor
(0)I know exactly how the "ugly" girl feels. I get people who are very impatient (I work in a pharmacy) and they start bitching and insulting in Hindi, and they don't know I can understand until I say "Just 5 more minutes! ^_^" in Hindi.
I loathe people like you. You think you're the only ones that speak that language?
(0)Hahaha, I do the same except in Russian.
Luckily that hasn't happened to me yet..or maybe someone understood me but stayed quiet.
(0)Had nothing else to discuss, eh? Sad.
(0)You get what you deserve.
(0)hahahaha you and your cunt family deserved that one. Learn some respect next time
(0)You deserved that.
(0)thats KINDA funny cuz i always thought people who speak other languages talk smack about people in front of them cuz they assume they cant understand, but its NOT REALLY as funny as it is IGNORANT.
(0)Today, I was at a restaurant and a family behind me was talking about how ugly I am. They were talking in Swedish because they assumed I couldn't understand. Swedish is my native language. FML.
#48 - On 03/15/2009 at 10:26am by Bubs
(0)Fan ta dig ^^
(0)# 6, they have å just not æ and ø like in Denmark.
I'm Danish and I know, u can't just talk about whatever u want, when u're outside the country...
It's rude and it's dangerous, cause ppl might actually understand.
(0)This happened to me one time in French-- some asshole Frenchmen were talking in French about how fat and ugly I was. I wish I had had the balls to say something like that girl instead of just letting it go and feeling shitty for the rest of the day. At least be kind enough to wait until they're not in earshot, or better yet just be kind.
(0)Äh, det är ju oskyldigt. Man menar ju egentligen inget illa med det :)
(0)Easy fix so that doesn't happen again; don't say behind someones back anything you wouldn't say to their face. Doesn't matter what language you're speaking.
(0)Karma is a bitch, no?
I do it all the time when people talk about me in Chinese. I'm white, so they never see it coming.
(0)Thats what you get for being an ass.
(0)Protip: don't talk about anyone unless you're sure they're out of earshot.
(0)hahaha dude... some of us r clever enough not to get caught :P
#57 - On 03/15/2009 at 11:20am by newguy90
(0)Assholes like you abuse the ability to speak another language. Fuck you.
#58 - On 03/15/2009 at 11:25am by justjayit
(0)haha you so deserved that, and the girl was right. speak in your language if you want to, even about other people (who doesn't) but make sure they don't hear you anyway.
ps: there are even foreigners who understand swedish, i've also lived in sweden for 2 years - so you're never safe :p
(0)haha.. now thats funny.
i bet you guys learned ur lesson!!
(0)#23 It deff means "go to hell" not "fuck you".
(0)#3 is the one you insulted, apparently.
(0)I hate when people do that. It's not witty or smart to assume that the people around you don't speak your language. I've had this happen to me more than I can count (with French, not Swedish) and it always pisses me off. Have the balls to say it to her face if you're so willing to say it right in front of her.
(0)OP=douche
(0)YDI. shouldn't b judgin people ... u might not b that hot urself, but u don't see people runnin round in diff languages talking shit bout u...then again, u wouldn't kno huh? cuz u wouldn't b able to understand =o
(0)HAHA omfg
haha man vet ju aldrig med folk längre, vilka som är svenska och inte:o
menmen, hon va nog ganska ful i såfall!
(0)Your fault for being a fucking bitch. Honestly, you totally deserved it, I have no sympathy for you, and I hope you learned your lesson.

(0)"Waaaaaaa, boo hoo, fuck my life because someone else understood me calling them ugly, my life sucks."
You stupid fuck. It's scum like you that make me fear for society. Are you serious? You expect us to feel sorry for you? Those 576 people that think your life sucks are the dumbest shitballs on the planet.
(0)#39 your an ignorant fool to say that, people are free to speak their minds in any language they feel most comfortable expressing their thoughts, feelings, etc. Wtf makes you think that whenever you eavesdrop on others conversations they are talkin about you??!!?? You need to shutup and get over yourself...dickhole.
As for the swede you are a shallow asshole and you completly deserved what you got. But ignorance is bliss right?? whenever someone talks about you in a language you dont understand why the hell does it matter lmao
(0)Do you live in Sweden? You should have seen this one coming. Most people in Sweden know your language. You and your family must be pretty dimwitted.
(0)Hahaha, I love the Swedish comments on this one.
Also, #71, it's a safe guess that they weren't in Sweden at the time.
As for the OP, that was rude. Your family sounds rather unpleasant.
(0)I agree with #3.

(0)hahahaha wow. totally deserved that one. my two friends are fluent in albanian and whenever they talk to eachother in albanian i feel like they're talking about me.
(0)dont be so hard on this guy, i think thats hilarious and if shes ugly who cares if she heard u
(0)That's what you get for being a rude asshole!
(0)Uzpuutiigais meesls, dabuuji peec nopelniem :P
(0)okay number 3 i bet you've never talked about someone in your life. get the hell of your high horse anyone could have done this
(0)people like you are the reason people are racist.
(0)Oh common, everyone talks shit, it's human nature. You people call it ignorant or being an asshole because you can relate to the ugly chick.. and awww, POOR YOU. In actuality, it's TRUTH and REALITY. It's called freedom of speech. It's a cruel, harsh world, darlings, and if you can't take the heat, get the fuck outta the kitchen.
#81 - On 03/15/2009 at 3:48pm by sillybxtch
(0)Haha, I'm half Swedish, half English and currently live in the UK because I'm studying here. I agree it's nice to be able to talk fairly openly with your mate about stuff without anyone else understands. But you always have to keep in mind that other people actually might understand.
Basically everyone judges other people sometimes, it doesn't make him an awful person. Just a bit stupid. ;)
Kul att se så många svenskar på FML ;) haha
(0)And #74: "Go back to Sweden if you're gonna talk Swedish in public", that's just stupid.
(0)That's why you never assume what languages people can understand or speak. You got exactly what you deserved. Next time, realize you're not nearly as cool as you think you are for being able to trash talk about others - in a public place, when said person is only a few feet away - without feeling the consequences, even if you think they don't understand.
(0)I know everyone makes fun of people. I'll willingly admit I do.
But do you really have to be so much of a cowardice asshole to make fun of her in a different language, thinking that she wouldn't understand it?
If you're gonna make fun of someone, grow a pair and say it in a language that you think they speak.
Or better yet, just shut your mouth and keep shit to yourself [yeah, I know, I should follow my own advice].
(0)That's what you get for being a doucher.
#86 - On 03/15/2009 at 4:16pm by libertyprime
(0)wooh #3. and to the writer you really should go to hell you fucking bitch. your a little prick.
(0)Now you know to keep your rude comments to yourself in any and all languages.
(0)how could you not have deserved that you asshole.
#89 - On 03/15/2009 at 4:26pm by whyowhy9877
(0)i hope your conscience eats you alive
(0)how rude to gossip about other people.. i love hearing other languages, it's beautiful to have diversity, but if you're using it to gossip about other people you should have the guts to say it in english.
(0)Wow. Do you feel better about yourself now that you've called someone you don't even know, ugly? Way to go! You fail.
And to the rest of you that agree with him or high class citizen #9 (@@), karma's a bitch. :-)
(0)wow, you really deserve that for being so mean
I mean, chances are someone will understand you, and why would you even do that with your family anyways! Crazy...
(0)Thank you #48.
How is this an FML for you? Get over yourself, you're the one who was being the asshole, accept the consequences.
(0)You deserved that one...tönt...but I love how people here get on their high horses...
(0)lol this is so funny, i hate when that happens though I always wanted to learn a language that not many ppl speak so i could talk about them. Talkin about ppl is one of my favorite past times. #3 calm down everybody does it, maybe u should try it and stop takin things serious that are online....
(0)You deserved that. You're a jerk.
(0)haahha vad ? , varför pratar du om folk .. men svenska är ett fantastiskt språk. jag ar halv svensk:)

(0)OMG
my sister and I do this all the time!
NO ONE speaks Swedish here, so we've never had this happen.
(0)Totally not your fault! i'm swedish too and this happens to us a lot too!! i feel bad sometimes, but then i remember i REALLY don't like americans, so whatever!
(0)#102 you're such a fucking asshole. there are so many countries that this could've taken place in, like Canada and Australia. there's nothing wrong with being american and you're being horribly stereotypical. you can go to hell you dick.
(0)you so deserve that.
maybe next time you won't be so rude.
(0)lol Jackass. Just be glad they didn't do more than just tell you that. There's plenty of people who would've.

(0)k obviously there are swede;s everywhere...... canada and america are so mixedd ...
so ... ? its not ok too talk about someone in front of them without recieving a comment...
even if your talking swedish.. spanish...arabic like i dont think it matters what language your speaking in
just be more aware that the country is mixed and that maybe the person next to you speaks the same language ..
just sayin....................
(0)#102, unless you know every single American ever, it's unnecessary to say that. *rolls eyes*
and OP is a dumbass. haha. next time, try to say stuff to people's faces. ;)
(+1)Okay seriously, you think your so smart for talking trash in another language?
It's SO obvious when people do that. Even people that don't know your language can probably tell, just because if you suddenly switch to another language to say something it's OBVIOUS you're doing it to hide what you're saying.
That ticks me off. It's so rude. It's the same thing as someone turning to their friend and whispering in their ear right in front of you. Did you work hard to learn Swedish, or did you grow up with it? Just because you happened to have a family that raised you bilingual doesn't make you any better than the rest of us.
And even if you DID work hard to become bilingual, rubbing it in other people's faces is like that kid in class who got an A on the test and then brags about it to everyone. You must have some serious insecurities if you need to act superior like that all the time. I actually feel sorry for you. I mean, I get that everyone talks trash, but what you're doing is worse. You're talking trash AND trying to look better than everyone else at the same time. Really, have some respect for other human beings.

(0)your life isn't effed. you deserved that bad.
what's so cool about talking about others in a different language?
you're rude.
have some respect.
#110 - On 03/15/2009 at 7:37pm by stepyogameupoh
(0)My family does the same thing in Portuguese. It seems to be very common among foreigners.
People might say you're mean, but everyone does it all the time, and people who can only speak English just whisper to each other.
More power to you.
(0)I speak Swedish with my family all the time, it's just not natural to speak anything else with them. However, there have been minimal times that I've said anything bad about other people, maybe a few times in the six and a half years I've lived in the US. The fact that your parents didn't scold you is shameful, don't place yourself above others. I hope you learned your lesson. ALWAYS assume people can understand you, and leave your trashtalking at home.
(0)wow youre cool for doing that.
a cashier bitched about my uncle, to her manager, in polish, for something that wasn't even his fault. When the transaction was complete, he said "Before you rudely talk about someone, make sure they don't speak the language first" in perfect polish. her jaw dropped.
serves you rude people right, who so pompously think you can do that because youre fluent in a second language. STUPID.
(0)I sometimes do that in French. And then I listened to these two boys talk about how hot my friend and I were in French and what they'd like to do to us in bed (while they served us food), because they thought we were superAmericans who didn't speak their language. I responded to them in perfect French and they looked like they might keel over. It's just common sense. If you don't want someone to hear it, don't say it - in any language.
(0)Way to be, man. Way to be.
(0)Hahaha snyggt jobbat ..!
#23: No, it means go to hell.
#52: Jag håller faktiskt delvis med.
(0)This is why everyone should learn at least one phrase in languages they commonly run across: "I speak [language]." For example, "hablo español" or "je parle francais." Even if it's slightly stilted, and you really DON'T, it might give them enough pause to reconsider saying things they might not want you to overhear, while thinking it's private :)
(0)Whoa, well that was silly of you to be so mean and assume that people don't know what you are saying. Maybe next time you should not be so public about it?
(0)This is why Americans have such a distrust of immigrants. Despite the language it is very uncomfortable to be in, for example, an elevator of immigrants babbling away in a language you can't understand. This confirms everyone's fears that they are being talked about behind their back.
(0)What are the fucking odds!?!?!
(0)ROFL!! at #2.
(0)Wow... that is a really mean thing for you to say. So she was ugly (in your opinion)... you guys should find something better to talk about.
(0)#120, I guess it depends on how often SwedishBozo does this. From his comment, it sounds like he does it a lot, so I'm betting the odds were pretty high.
(0)And people wonder why everyone hates foreigners: you don't properly tip and u talk shit
(0)Ha, you got what you deserved. Maybe you won't try talking about people in front of their faces when you think they can't understand you anymore.
(0)you're awesome!! I love people who speak their mind, even if it's in a different language. I do that all the time but just for fun :) and people have understood me, but big deal! You don't mean anything by it, it's not as if you know that girl. therefore it's just an observation. It's not like you're saying she's a horrible person. why should a stranger's comment bother you? that just means they're insecure :)
(0)SALTY! :D
(0)pwnd in your own language. teehee
(0)it was bound to happen someday
(0)lol, jerk.
(0)I hate when people sit around in America and talk shit about people in their native language. You'd think we were douche bags if we came to Sweden and talked shit in English. You deserved to get caught, maybe next time you'll think twice about talking about people.
(0)ok first of all, number 3, 132 and anybody with comments similar to this... you need to chill out. You are all hipocrits for saying shit like "you have a pathetice shameful life" and any other dumb shit like that. You cannot tell me that this is any different than talking behind a persons back when they are not there. Besides, im sure if you had the ability to speak a language that was not common in the place that you lived, im sure you would do the same thing occasionally if not all the time.
(0)Survey says.. the elitist douchebag deserved this one.
#134 - On 03/16/2009 at 5:32am by ill
(0)thats what you get for talking shit~
(0)@ #132: EVERYONE in sweden speaks english so good luck with that one
(0)haha, jag tyckte det var jätteroligt i alla fall =) har varit i samma situation själv flera gånger, det är alltid sjukt pinsamt haha.
#137 - On 03/16/2009 at 12:51pm by m88
(0)ok, talking in different laguages is really great, it makes you smarter. i speak english, french(my dads french) and swedish(my mums polish but has lived here since she was 5) and am learning spanish. i used to no malaysian and tagalog (my nannies were phillipina and malaysian) and arabic (i used to live in dubai and muscat.) speaking many languages makes u smarter and helps you understand more about other people and cultures. knowing many languages is NOT an excuse to trash talk and does not make u better than anyone else, especially if u trash talk.
ur self confidence is probably really bad and thats y u said that but you still totally deserved that, i would have been way meaner to you. thats happened loads of times wen i've been in france (i talk english every where cuz its my first language) when kids and adults trash talked about me ( i was about 13 the last time i was there) i wish i had talked back to them, but my mama raised me better.
#137 ur totally right, everyone speaks english here, so im not stupid enough to talk trash about the slutty lokking fjortis next to me :P lol

(0)btw, america doesn't belong to english speakers, they stole the land from native americans, so anyone has the right to speak what ever the hell language they want and anyone who says otherwise is a rasist hypocrit douche that should have paid more attention in history class cuz i've never even been to america and no that. assholes.
(0)Bahaa, That's Karma for you!
(0)Epic fail! i hope someone kicks your ass next time you do that my only regret is that it wont be me:(... STUPID PRICK
(0)Everyone's acting like they never talked trash about anyone EVER.
Honestly, half of you guys would turn to your friend and say something if some ugly 16 yr old scene kid walked by sucking a soother.
(0)Hah... rätt fint hur snabbt karma kan återställa balansen...
(0)if your gonna talk about someone, have the balls to say it to their face, or at least in a language they can understand. If your speaking in a language no one knows and your talking about everyone around you, sorry, thats just cowardly, seems like your afraid of what they might do if they hear you.
(0)Although I love to do that by my own, when you're honest in your language don't be surprised when you get caught in your language. ^^
(0)Oh! I love listening to people talk since I can understand three languages outside of English, and two more to the extent of hearing people talk smack. Since I don't look much like the Polish side of my family it is always interesting to hear what Polish people have to say about me. Usually I'm lucky with them though...
An Italian guy's grandmother would do the same as you guys did. Except they lived in an Italian neighborhood and she didn't seem to realize that or care. So he was always turning red and telling her to keep it down. My grandmother sometimes does the same in Polish, although we usually get lucky since the people are Russian and can't understand everything she says. Phew! :)
Haha, you deserved that.
A guy did that to me when I was holidaying in Oslo, Norway. He was the waiter at a restaurant and called me ugly to another waiter. I speak Norwegian, so I informed him of this fact :) The manager overheard the whole conversation.
I got some free food out of it, and the waiter got yelled at, and was forced to apologise to me :D

(0)You deserved it
(0)speak english
(0)it is soooooo annoying when people talk in their own language in public, and really loud too. it is obnoxious. yeah, sometimes, they don't know english etc etc. 1) either learn the language 2)don't fucking talk so loud. god damn.
(0)You totally deserved this for trying to be smart. Prick.
(0)I really, really hate when people speak another language publicly. Maybe YOU think it's funny, or maybe you just want to have a private conversation, but I personally think it's rude, no matter WHAT you're saying. If you're in America, please speak English - at least when you're in public.
You totally deserved that though. It was shallow & rude. Hope you learned something.
(0)ignorance at its best. if you don't like Americans then get out of our country. end of story.
(0)I'm learning Swedish even though I'm not a Swede.. so there aren't necessarily a lot of Swedes.
Shame on you, though. You never know who's studying a second/third/etc language, and you'll never know what level of fluency they're at. My dad only speaks English, but we keep commentary like this in private places, like the car, or at home.
Just a tip.
(0)I hate all these people that say the OP is just being a douche, and they deserve that for trying to be a smart ass, and that this is abusing the knowledge of more foreign languages. But most of all, those that say that they should have the balls to say it in their face in a language they can understand. In fact, I can't stand that.
What makes this have anything to do with being brave enough? We don't see people going up to each other and yelling out crude remarks at each other. This is no different.
If anything, that girl is being disrespectful by eavesdropping on the OP's family's conversation.
They have the right to communicate in whatever language they want; especially if this took place in the US, where there isn't even an official language.
#111 got it right. If you can speak different languages with people, all power to you.
And especially #132. See, the thing is, almost every non-English speaking country in the world enforces English classes in school. Many Americans are the ones who won't get off their high horses and don't bother learning anything else.
You work hard to learn a language--> You have the right to use it.
Simple as that.

(0)#139 Where the hell did anyone's land ever come from? I guarantee you that every place on earth was habitated by a different people before the current one. So no one's country is their own. Even you should "KNOW" that. But you don't. Don't be ignorant just because you act the same way as the OP.
The OP should learn to watch their own and their families mouths in public because no matter where you are, that's bad manners and poor upbringing to talk about people behind their backs. They would be insulted if someone speaking another language talked about them in public. Also it doesn't show a whole lot of self confidence or security when you do something like this. For crying out loud, bully's in grade school do that. If you can't be above a grade schooler than wow, the lot of you have a lot of growing up to do.
Bottom line is the OP, their family, and anyone who agrees with them, are poor citizens of the world and need to learn some self-confidence and respect for other people. And it doesn't matter where this incident took place.

(0)Haha, den förtjänade du!
(0)Hey I'm black and can speak fluent sweedish so you never know!! HAHA
I love speaking to friends about other people tho
(0)Ditt eget feil din dumskalle.
(0)haha, det är så kul att alla tar det här så seriöst x) dreamzone, snälla lär dig svenska
(0)Dra åt helvete.
Asshole.
(0)Hehe, man måste vara försiktig med sånt ;-)

(0)"A shame no one threw a chair at you."
Violence solves everything.
The sheer amount of righteous indignation, nevermind hypocrisy, in this thread is staggering. Remember your vitriol the next time you judge someone. Oh, wait. Of course it's different when you do it.
(0)152- That's a very intolerant thing to say. If a group of people can speak English, they can if they'd like. But if they basically just feel more comfortable conversing in their first language, they should be able to. I'm not in any way condoning what the poster did (save that for private areas, if you want to do it at all), but you should by all means be allowed to converse in the language you feel most comfortable in. You shouldn't force everyone to speak English for your own personal eavesdropping pleasure.
(0)haha fan va bra! jag gor ocksa sa nar jag ar ute med min syster! skit skoj are!!
(0)@164; The OP Wasnt talking in swedish because he was more comfortable with it he was talking because he enjoys badmouthing people in a way that they cant understand. it wasnt about which language he prefers, so yes. He deserved it for trying to be smart and is definitely a prick.
(0)this is what ur FAMILY talks about? wow, way to be role models, parents, haha. i cant say ive never done that with my friends but... wow. i hope u learned that ur not the only person/family in the world that speaks another language and um just cuz ppl dont speak swedish doesnt mean theyre stupid. ever heard of tones of voice and, like, not pointing? -_-
(0)Never assume the folks around you don't understand! I miss the days before my students realized I spoke Spanish...
(0)Personally i think the OP is a prick. Why even bother talking about some random girl who you have never met before and will likely never see again in your life?
To all those who say " get off your high horses you talk behind peoples backs too" and shit.. i can honestly say that i dont really care about people who happen to be sitting next to me in a restaurant so i wouldnt really ever take the time to comment about them and i dont talk about my friends behind their backs either, if i have a feeling towards them ill just tell them, if they dont like it then they can just not hang out with me anymore
And finally... to whoever it was that said Americans are the only assholes who wont learn other languages.. fuck you. If I travel to France or Spain or wherever then ill learn their language however if im going to be in my own country of America then ill speak english and ill expect others to speak english which is our main language just as i would do if i was visiting their country. (On a side note America kicks ass anyways and we do whatever we want so we dont need to learn other languages hahaha just kidding.. a little..)
I kinda feel like a dick for writing so much but oh well

(0)snobby asshole.
(0)Haha förstår precis vad du menar. Svårt att inte kommentera ibland. Själv har ingen sagt nåt tillbaka... men man får väl vara lite försiktigare i framtiden...
(0)ur a bitch..racism is because of people like you
(0)#170.
"Why even bother talking about some random girl who you have never met before and will likely never see again in your life?"
That's kind of the idea of gossip. There are so many people who DO do it that we have the word for it. If nobody did it, we wouldn't have the word. Imagine that.
And you say you don't, but to be honest, I can't believe that you've never mentioned a quality of someone that you dislike to someone else. I really can't.
And you're not exactly helping your point. It's exactly the mindset about your last point ("On a side note America kicks ass anyways and we do whatever we want so we dont need to learn other languages hahaha just kidding.. a little..") that I can't tolerate.
I myself am American, and I hate that this is the image that we project to the world about ourselves.
That's the snobbiest thing you could ever say, saying that others should learn our language and we shouldn't have to do shit.
I'm so passionate about this, I don't even know what more I can say without causing a riot.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again.
The US has no official language, and even if it did, people absolutely have the right to use other languages.
That's like saying that you shouldn't play basketball if you're the presence of people who can't or that you shouldn't do calculus homework near people who don't understand.
That's ridiculous.
I concede that in most places it isn't considered polite to talk about people behind their backs, but then again, I still believe pretty firmly that just about everyone does that occasionally anyway.
And her eavesdropping on them is being equally, if not more, rude as well.

(+1)Swedish guyz are soo hot
(0)She should have b**ch slapped your ass.
(0)If you're gonna be in our country, speak the language! :V
Then you're LESS likely to get owned like this
(0)Rule of thumb, you ignorant hateful simpleton:
Never say anything about somebody that you would not say TO them.
(0)Wow you and youre family are kind of all dicks, Im not saying Ive never talked bad about anyone but I would never do it with my family and in public even if I was confident no one could speak our language.
I speak Spanish and some Cantonese, so I love it when I hear people talking shit thinking I cannot understand because Im just some silly little blonde white girl. Dont ever assume anything because when you assume things you make an ass out of u and me ;)
(0)omFg i hate when people in AMERICA speak another fucking language in front of a whole bunch of people!!
you WAY deserve that & i bet youre REALLY fucking ugly to be spending youre time insulting other people!
and you wonder why we dont accept you!
(0)you deserved that completely.
that's ignorant.
(0)wow way to fail buddy...man im fat and i dont even insult ppl in french...wtf is wrong with you
(0)"no one ever understands here".
that, my friend is a fallacy xD
(0)Deserved it.
That's like when you go to the nail salon and [not being racist, just stating truth] the asian ladies talk about you in their language.
Congrats. I wish she'd have come over and socked you and your family members in the face.
(0)Yeah you deserved that.
(0)yah good for her. you deserved it you arrogant prick. if you're going to insult someone have the balls to say it in a language you know they'll understand.. that's one thing i hate about a lot of foreigners, using their language to mask insults.. I hope a mule kicks you in the face so that hopefully you will have perminent damage and have to live with the fact that people will always be insulting you behind your back about how you look
(0)tooma
The story was pretty lolz. Because while bilingual American's aren't totally unheard of, Swedish is pretty esoteric-particularly outside of the upper midwest. Admit it, you out there in comment land, when you hear someone speaking a language you've never heard before, that sounds weird, you listen, and you maybe stare a little before you catch yourself, trying to puzzle out where they're from. I do it too. And there is definitely a sense of novelty that comes with believing that you and the person you are chatting with are the only people within earshot or longer, if you'd like, who are able to speak that language. Its sort of empoweringly isolating and an experience that tends to be outside of the daily norm for most people.
From beginning to end there were comments like #167 "good. i hate people who talk in other languages to try to sound smart. speak english", #171 "snobby asshole.", and #173 "ur a bitch..racism is because of people like you" (what, because someone is speaking another language you feel justified in hating them/viewing them as less then you or as less worthy of rights?) appeared throughout the thread, reinforcing the open anti-foreign/anti-immigrant/anti-"other" attitude that sits below the surface is is not typically addressed or confronted in meaningful (read: non-superficial/lip service-y ways) in American society. The casual nature, and frequency of these comments disturbed me a lot more then the open xenophobia in comments like #132 who hates when people "talk their own language" in public, because "damn" they should learn English, and #152 and doesn't want to hear people speaking a language other then English in front of English speakers even when having a private conversation, who both acknowledge that in conversations between themselves people might "feel more comfortable" in their own language. The use of the phrase "their own language".
What really caught me off guard was how many of the commenters were upset about people "speaking another language to sound smart" or viewing bilingualism as a form of snobbery. It says a lot about the impact of a lack of foreign language instruction in America.
Also, WTF, unless all of your ancestors are from England, then they had to learn English when they came to this country, and (shock of shocks!) probably spoke their native language with eachother/other native speakers when possible to preserve that part of their lives and for convenience. Have some sympathy, and some compassion.

(+1)Haha, thats what you get, I like being white in Korea, and knowing the language, because I get to be the one who calls them out on it. It really is fun to see people who assume you don't know their language talk smack right back to them when they blatantly insult them. I hope you were embarrassed and learned your freaking lesson.
(0)arrogant prickk

(0)lmfao, dumbass, you totally had it coming.
(0)Seriously Can't You Talk About Flowers or some shit? I'm Sure That girl is Prettier than YOU!
(0)I hate people who talk in other languages in front of others about them. Maybe its a sign that you should stop being a dick. Just because you mask your hate doesn't mean its there and that you're a good person.
(0)Man, how could you say something like that. Don't just assume that no one else would understand, asshole.
(0)haha, i do the same in chinese! but your situation has never happened to me before :P
(0)I bet you're gonna be paranoid from now on! That's what you get.
(0)You're rude.
The girl is funny.
Get over it, it's your fault.
#197 - On 04/10/2009 at 5:29am by Scoochie
(0)What a surprise, Swedes acting like selfish, arrogant dickholes.
(some exceptions apply, but very rarely)
OH wait, it isn't, you people are known for only speaking in your native tongue to let noone know what rats you are.
(0)you know?? i hate when faggots do this at school. they'll be walking around thinking they're all cool with their german and shit. so i gotta say, thank god you got what you deserved rude little fucker.
(0)attercrop:you are my hero. plain and simple
"Jag ska kraks på din kuk"
^^^best fricken thing i've heard all day.
(0)I don't have a problem with people who speak their own language in public or private. What I have a problem with is the fact that making fun of people is your family's idea of a hobby. Grow up. Do you think it makes it okay to be rude about people just because you think they don't understand you?
To commenters saying the girl was rude for eavesdropping: I don't think so. The OP's family was probably speaking loudly if they thought no one would understand, and she was sitting at the next table, so she might not have been able to help overhearing.
#201 - On 04/13/2009 at 2:07pm by metonymy
(0)Gotta love karmic retribution!
(0)screw those people up there who are preaching to you :P
me and my family do it ALL the time too
so it's not you being pretentious it's just you saying what you want in the most comfortable form
screw the haters they're just jealous
(0)Hey, I was born in sweden but i dont speak swedish lol, first i think its hilarious that she spoke swedish too, maybe u should be a little carefuller next time. Then, #5, ur mother taught u well. number 137 i think, not EVERYONE in sweden speaks swedish. They arent fluent until theyre over like 7 or 8.
finally, number 6, those characters are both swedish. The language has 26 letters just like ours then plus 3 on the end which I cant do on this keyboard but its the A with a circle above it, the lowecase a with 2 dots, and an o with 2 dots above it.
ohh yeah btw, ALL OF YOU ARE HYPOCRITES SO SHUT UP. He got what he deserved. So shut it.
(0)Du förtjänade det där, ledsen att behöva säga det dock. Lär dig lite hyfs och sluta snacka skit om folk.
To those who don't speak Swedish, I won't translate that.
(0)lol, regardless of whether people can hear or understand you, you're still being rude. if you're THAT opportunistic about the chance to assert superiority over people you don't know, you pretty much have it coming
(0)ahaha dude everyone knows that language
(0)Wow way to be an arrogant douche. YDI heck she should have insulted you right back or smacked you.
(0)NI SA GI JI JI TO BA WO JI JI FANG ZA NI ZHUAI BA LI PI GU LIPS

(0)That's what you get for being a shallow fucking asshole. You think you're above people because they can't understand you? Fuck you.
(0)Its dra til helvete, and its Norwegian not Swedish, although both countries use similar languages and mix both together often.
(0)owned.
Shit happens, lol :)
(0)I'm nearly fluent in English but, if possible, I prefer dutch so if I'm in france with dutch friends I speak dutch, plain and simple. Making fun of someone is always rude, no matter how you do it.
Besides, being a regular reader of the site I've come to realise that most of you native english speakers don't really have a complete grasp of your own language. That's okay, but please don't go around shouting that everyone should learn english instead of their native tongues. Practice what you preach ;)
(0)You and your family shouldn't be such assholes. If you want to talk shit about people why not grow some balls and do it in their language? Oh thats right, because your a pussy. :) You deserved it cunt.
(0)Haha these girls were talking about me in spanish once and they thought i didn't understand and i cursed them out. in plain English.
(0)HAhahaha you are a retard, you cunt. Sfiena drajeta. (Guess what I just called you for your faggotness? =D)
(0)Ahaha, this is one of those learning experiences. I'm not going to act like the majority of the rest of these people and call you a cunt or retard or bitch or anything, because you're only stupid if you didn't lear from your mistake. Are you going to talk shit about people in Swedish anymore?
(0)Tsk tsk. That's what you get.
(0)#6;
Yeah thats correct, but we have both Å, Ä and Ö.
(0)why do you have to make fun of people/judge their appearances? people feel bad enough, especially people who are legitimately ugly, so ydi, bitch
(0)Not so much a YDI as a "Haha, OWNED!". You'd be surprised who can speak another language. (Shoot, I can't!)
(0)I'm learning Japanese, but I learned just a little Spanish only so I knew when hispanic people, quite often older men, were talking about me. Their always caught off guard when I get pissed because I know what their saying.
(0)thats amazing :)
i'm really glad she understood swedish, she should have said something worse :p
(0)You think you are better than others because you speak a second language, and you use this to insult people without you wanting them to know? you are a loser and I hope you can find better things to talk about with your family.
(0)Go back to Switzerland duech bag.
(0)I really hope that is a joke, switzerland? Come on.
(0)Your whole family does it?
That's pretty fucking sad.
You deserved worse than what happened.
(0)Dra a heltiva!!
(0)whisper next time ;D
(0)haha, smmmaaaaart. Jag har gjort samma misstag i österrike.. xD I've made the same mistake in austria.
(0)I love number 9's comment rock on
(0)haha sånt är så kul när man tror att ingen annan vet vad man säger :D haha
Lite kul var det iaf :D haha
(0)That is what you get for coming over here and acting like assholes.
Get the hell out of my country, idiot.
(0)Some people. I'm fluent in spanish (which most people don't expect because I'm a redheaded white girl) and I've heard talk about some horrible things in there native language because they assume others can't understand. It's ridiculous how stupid people can be.
#234 - On 06/21/2009 at 9:16pm by Luluzoo
(0)how do you NOT deserve it? I'd say that in sweedish, but you're in an English speaking country, and apparently you know how to speak it, so speak it! if you don't have the balls to say it in English in front of me, you probably shouldn't be saying it.
learn some manners, asshole.
(0)As an American, I hate you for that. Arrogant pricks like you piss us the fuck off. Burn in hell, asshole.
#237 - On 07/20/2009 at 12:16am by LSD
(0)You're an ass. Don't talk about people that way especially when you don't know them!
(0)All you americans are right to be outraged at the ABSOLUTE NERVE of people who could even consider speaking in a language that isn't English. Imagine that you might have to learn about a different cultureand people. Cast shame on these people and deport them immediatly. Agus ná bí ag gearán an t-am ar fad faoi daoine ag caint i teanga eile. B'fheidir go bhfuil sé a dteanga féin agus cén fáth nach deireann siad as fhraincis nó spáinis nó aon teanga eile. Sin é le haghaidh mise agus go n-éirí an t-ádh libh.
(0)I agree that some dudes are really pissy about speaking English in America, but just in case you forgot English is in fact our primary language. MOST who act like that aren't retarded hillbillies who cringe at the thought of learning its just a fact that in China your expected to speak Chinese; Sweden Swedish; Brazil Portuguese etc... Yes a lot of people who act like that are grade A douche bags but talking rudely about people, expecting them not to understand is also a real dick move
(0)239 is on to something.
Sin é le haghaidh mise agus go n-éirí an t-ádh libh. indeed sir. indeed
copy and paste ftw
(0)people here from america seem to need total control of everything that is said, requesting us to speak english when in america... if i was in america with my family, we would ofc speak swedish to each other. why on earth would we want to speak english to each other? just so other people can hear what we're saying? its then called eavesdropping, and is considered discourteous.. if for example, a spanish family came to sweden, i would think it would be silly of them to speak swedish/english.. just plain stupid.
OT: OP, du förtjänar det trots allt.
(0)YDI x 10000000000
(0) Your family's life is lacking if that's all they talk about. Yours included.

(0)Swedish peps r gay
(0)Nice one. Judging by your inability to spell more than 2/4 words in your comment correct, (and you probably were only able to spell "Swedish" because you saw it in the FML) I believe that you are, in fact, the one "hoo r gay."
(0)We are neither gay nor illiterate. You seem to be both Mr.Mathsponge.
(0)Det hadde du godt av!
(0)Something like that happened to me once.... I was waiting tables in an italian restaurant. My table was 5 guys from Germany. I guess they assumed that because it was an Italian restaurant now one knew German. Well my family is from Germany and I speak it just fine and as I was pouring their wine they were talking about how nice my ass was. I replied in German "Thank you but aren't you gentlemen a little too old for me?" So my point is don't make assumptions you'll just end up f**king yourself lol

(0)Wow I cannot believe this girl posted this expecting sympathy. This girl is a terrible person.
(0)first off you deserve that, and secondly, mogan you are ugly as fuck. I seriously just threw up in my mouth a bit
(0) HA! :-P
(0):/ YDI... That's really rude... Judging people like that, just because you think they can't understand you, I suppose you do that often. It's about time you got caught!! :'(
(0)If I could push the you deserve it button as many times as I wanted, I would be up all night doing just that. What a jerk.
(0)you got what you deserved.
(0) Today, I went to a Swedish resturaunt and some guy was talking to his family in Swedish about how ugly the girl
(0)karma.
(0)seriously.. thats just cruel. dont assume that people dont know what your saying. karma bit u in the ass.lol..
(0)lol ive been on both ends of this situation
i guess you cant really help the idea that u can diss ppl without them knowing, even if uve been on the receiving end too. difference is i speak a rather rare language and its really surprising to be caught :S
(0) what a jerk u r. and ur family for teaching u to talk like that
(0) I frickin hate when foreigners do that... go back to ur own country
