Well if you want to go the whole distance with the no power thing, just do what the Celts used to do and bury your food. The top level will germinate, using all the oxygen up which in turn will keep the food below it fresh. The Celts effectively ended in the 5th century or so and they are still finding deposits of food that is still edible. I think you can now find that food on the shelves of Walmart actually.
