In the 21th century and specifically being in North America, the Police basically have any power. If your boyfriend actually understood basic criminology and the certain perimeters the law enforcement work around with then your boyfriend would have not been so intimidated and cry like a baby.

Aww!! This is actually a decent FML...your dad should be a little less intimidating. No date should have to be interrogated almost at gunpoint, some lines were definitely crossed with that. You might want to talk to him about that when his gun is in another room lol. I don't think your date's that much of a wuss for crying after that, though it depends on how much he cried :P.
