Oh my, I love how everyone is talking about how archaic and sexist it is to take the man's name and anyone who disagrees is an idiot. If that's what he wants to do, good for him but don't sit there and rip people who believe differently than you do. That's exactly what you're getting mad at his family for doing.

Coming from a collectivist culture where passing down the "family name" is pretty important (and having a rare surname myself), I'm inclined to approve of what you're doing for your lady.
