This is not unusual. In Australia at least, beer is supplied at the majority of wakes, so bringing your own is just being considerate because you don't want to drink all theirs.

A 12-pack might be a bit much, IF it was all for her, but a wake is meant to be a celebration, and it's not remotely unusual to drink at one.
