Gotta get that sweet sweet nicotine

By MCMB33 - This FML is from back in 2012 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I caught my pregnant wife smoking. This is after I quit over a month ago to show her my support and be a good influence on our child. FML

Smoking will NOT cause you to have a disabled child. It could cause asthma, and low birth weight, yes. But it wont make your child retarded. There are other health risks true, but retardation is NOT one of them. My dr told me to cut down, not quit and I did. My daughter was born perfectly healthy. We were even sent home the day after she was born. She's a very smart and healthy child... Do your research before you run your mouth!

Ok, it could cause low birth weight and asthma and other issues, honestly who really wants that for their child? You can't blame the dad, he's just looking out for his future kid

Whoa, are you ******* stupid? "It can just cause these things which can result in death," you say. You're a terrible mother if you think that. Smoking has negative effects, perhaps not as well-known as alcohol's but still. My older sister has had some very, very nasty asthma attacks in her life, and I have cerebral palsy. My mother both smoke and drank rather heavily. Please, anyone, tell me again that having an otherwise healthy lifestyle will negate these. Just because your firstborn didn't suffer, doesn't mean shit - my youngest sister is perfectly fine, after all. I'm sorry that any mother thinks that she should go through a pregnancy without placing the life-to-be first. It doesn't matter how "stressful" or "difficult" it is, think of someone other than you for once before you do something your child will have to bear the burden of for the rest of their life.

Seriously YOU ARE A FRICKIN IDIOT! so you are willing to put any of those risks on your child just to smoke a cig? I mean it's not even good for yourself you idiot. I quit smoking when i was pregnant but my son luckily was born at a healthy weight has asthma. He needs five nebulizer treatments a day three of them being steroids. He was hospitalized twice in his first year of life. YOU ARE SOOO EFFIN LUCKY your child was not born at a low birthweight or with asthma or any other problems. You only carry a baby for NINE months, it's THAT hard to put that babies needs before your own?? Selfish B*tch.

I meant BUt has asthma* not luckily he does

I was pretty damn sure it wasn't weed. I was just trying to be funny. Apparently my humor isn't your style. Oh and commas **** em this isn't English class

Do I think drinking/smoking is a good idea when pregnant. No. But a lot of people get self-righteous for very little reason. My mom smoked all throughout being pregnant with me, and sparingly drank as well. I turned out happy, healthy, intelligent and totally free of any 'nicotine addiction'. I have never smoked and have absolutely no latent desire to. No defects whatsoever and far healthier than many others I know. My mother was exceedingly healthy in the other aspects of her life while pregnant ((exercised, ate a very 'natural' meat and produce-based diet, slept well)) and I'm willing to bet that statistic are skewed in that smokers will often be less healthy in their lifestyle as a whole. So really, cut the self-righteous crap and save your contempt. No, it's not the best idea ever, but it's hardly as bad as you might think, especially for an 'average' smoker:

There has been no proof linking smoking to birth defects. The only fact to date produced by studies is that it causes low birth weight. Not saying it's ok, but don't let people talk bullshit.

Cut the poor girl some slack . Pregnancy can cause crazy hormones and stress . Stress can cause miscarriages and other complications . He never said she smoked 20 ciggs a day. She prob had 1 a day which isn't going to cause any problems

As a smoker and mother I think a pregnant woman should not smoke. As soon as I found out I was pregnant I quit for the duration. I wish I would have never picked it back up. That said anyone that has not smoked can not understand how hard it is to quit. Maybe mama just had a moment of weakness and that was her only one. Baby will be healthier without the smokes but mama is human. Now if she has not changed her habit at all she is not necessarily a horrible person but really needs to Quit so her child won't have lung problems.

Smoking CAN cause all sorts of problems for the baby. I won't bother to list them all. Does it always cause problems?? NO. But what type of woman/mom-to-be is willing to take that gamble with their child's well being? Not a very good one I'd say. There are a lot of "hard" things in life--get over it. Do what's right. Lay down the smokes
