WTF dude?

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, a guy professed his love for me in front of my friends. The guy is my first cousin. FML
Today, I was going to break up with my boyfriend after we went out for dinner. To my surprise, our families were also in the restaurant, to witness him propose to me. FML
Today, the man I love showed me the ring he's going to give to the woman that he loves. Who is someone else. FML
Today, my boyfriend invited me over to his house. I was planning on breaking up with him while at his house. Turns out, it was a proposal party. I'm now engaged because it would've been rude to say no in front of his family that had flown in. FML
Today, the guy I've been seeing for a little over a week proposed to me. FML
Today, my sister broke up with her boyfriend of 4 years because he hadn't "popped" the question. I've just spent the last 2 months helping him plan the perfect proposal. FML
Today, my boyfriend proposed to me during a funeral. FML
Today, another man proposed to my girlfriend. She said yes. FML
Today, at a restaurant, I happily watched as my boyfriend of three years got down on his knees and proposed to me. Before I could say yes and hug him, a girl flung herself at him, kissed him and shouted, "Yes!" With us still highly confused, she then ran away. FML
Today, my best friend, the man who I've been in love with for nine years, finally told me he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me. Unfortunately, it was while he was using me to practice proposing to his girlfriend. FML
Feel like sharing it with the other FML users?

Don't worry op! He will cheat on her too! I'm sorry you had to go through that! You'll find someone better soon don't worry!

There is nothing in this FML that indicates that. He is, however, a massive prick for trying this, though.

Why is everyone mad at the cousin and the dude? They might not even be close cousins and might not even talk to her. And the guy might not have cheated on her. Plenty of people get engaged after a short time together. It sucks that OP had to see this proposal, but the boyfriend has a right to move on.
catherinecas 30
Yes I get that part. I just want to know why everyone is acting like the ex planned it to cause the maximum amount of pain for OP.

I agree with you on this one #25. As much as it hurts, everyone is entitled to his/her own happiness. If OP's ex has found happiness with someone else - although unfortunate that it is OP's cousin - then I don't see a problem with this. I wouldn't want someone to be with me if they are happy with someone else. Who wants to be the person that holds a loved one back from happiness? There is a lot in this FML that is left up to interpretation and granted, OP's ex could be the heartless asshole we're making him out to be in the comments, but I'm not going to assume they are unless OP follows up and confirms it.

#25 and #31 You two don't seem to get it. The boyfriend dumped OP FOR HER COUSIN. Whether or not they are close isn't important, the boyfriend got engaged to a family member of OPs and it was surely brought up beforehand, if not then seeing OP there is bound to give a clear message.
catherinecas 30
We don't know that he dumped her for her cousin. And my main point about them being close is if they're first/second/third cousins. I don't know all of them, and most of them don't know me well enough to know who I'm dating. How do other people's family reunions work? Do y'all all know each other? Mine is everyone one from the same branch gets together (say everyone from Ethel X). In my family that means there are about 50 people from my area, a couple dozen from France, a lot from Canada, and some dude from Luxembourg.

The guy certainly knew that OP was still hurting, so pulling off that kind of proposal in front of her is heartless enough to make him an asshole. He should have at least talked to her beforehand and given her the chance to leave and not have to witness the proposal.
catherinecas 30
@48, how was the guy supposed to know she would be there? What if her and the cousin have different last names and he didn't know? What if OP's family name is different from the reunion invitations? There are hundreds of people with my last name and they are not related to me. In my hometown alone there is another family with my last name that is not related to me by blood or marriage. We have to distinguish by that one family is by way of Carencro and one is by way of Scotia (as in Nova Scotia. No I don't know why they shorten it that way).

So, the ex has to delay is life and happiness because he needs to be sensitive of OP's feelings and walk on eggshells after 4 months? Yes, it sucks that OP is still hurting, but if she really loves him, she should be happy that he is happy. This is all assuming that he isn't a massive jerk and did what most people are assuming he did. Even if he met the cousin through OP, when you love someone, you love someone, it's not really something that can be forced. I know many many people that knew their gf/bf was "the one" after 4 months, so that alone is not an indication that he was cheating on OP. At 16 I moved in with my boyfriend after 3 months of knowing him. I've been with him now for almost 15 years. It took us 7 years to get pregnant, my sister has had 3 kids, easily, in that time. Was it insensitive for her to be excited and tell me about each pregnancy, and show off each baby to me, even though each time it would make me bawl and die a little inside? Not one bit. She was allowed to be happy, and she was allowed to show it without having to be worried about my reaction. I love my sister, and was happy for her. I now have 2 nieces, and 2 nephews that I adore, and now an 8 month old daughter that was so worth the wait. OP, if your ex isn't the giant asshole that everyone is assuming he is, I hope you can find it in your heart to be happy for him and his fiancé. It may hurt a lot, but you will heal, and once you do, you might just find the person who loves you the way you deserve to be loved. If he is the giant asshole that everyone is assuming he is, then you are still better off without him, as a one sided relationship would be harder on you then a break up. And everyone deserves to be with someone that loves them.

@31 - I can't agree with you here. He could have proposed anywhere - to do so in front of his ex (whether he knows she still loves him or not) is unbelievably disrespectful and insensitive.
catherinecas 30
How is it disrespectful and insensitive? At what point is he allowed to stop thinking about how his actions might affect his ex? Seriously where does it end? Does he have to hold off on starting a family if his ex has fertility? Because that baby's going to go family reunions too probably and what OP's feelings get hurt?! Honestly, if this weren't on FML and were posted somewhere from OP's view then people would telling yeah it's sad you still love him, but the world doesn't revolve around you.

#66 Well said.

mccrightp 29
That was a real dick move on his part. I'm so sorry that happened. Life will pay that back though.
Serenity77 11
Of all places he could've done it, he chose to do it in front of you? He had to of known that you still had feelings for him and such.
